REAL DEAL TURKEY CHILI RECIPE

Real Deal Turkey Chili Recipe image

This is the best turkey chili recipe you'll ever try, made with two types of chili powder, fire roasted tomatoes, lots of seasonings and plenty of ground turkey. It truly is the real deal when it comes to flavor.

Provided by Mike Hultquist

Categories     Main Course

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large onion (chopped)
2 jalapeno peppers (chopped)
1 small bell pepper (or sweet pepper, chopped)
1 spicy chili pepper
4 cloves garlic chopped
2 cans red kidney beans
3 cans fire roasted tomatoes ((42 ounces, or use equivalent fresh))
2 tablespoons ancho powder
2 tablespoons guajillo powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground cumin
1 teaspoon red chili flakes
Salt and pepper to taste
FOR SERVING: Sliced roasted jalapenos (spicy chili flakes, fresh chopped parsley or cilantro)

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a large pot and add the ground turkey, onion and peppers. Cook them down about 10 minutes, or until the turkey is cooked through and the vegetables are softened.
  • Add the garlic and cook another minute, stirring.
  • If using fresh tomatoes, chop them and add them to the pot. Cook about 10 minutes to let them break down. If using canned fire roasted tomatoes, just add them to the pot and go to the next step.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and give it all a good stir.
  • Cook the chili on low for at least 1 hour to let the flavors develop, stirring every now and then. Adjust for seasonings if you wish.
  • Serve in bowls with your favorite fixins.

REAL-DEAL CHILI

Real-Deal Chili image

Bacon adds smoky flavor to this authentic Southwestern beef chili. Masa harina, or fine cornmeal, helps thicken it. Serve the lime wedges on the side.

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Beef Recipes     Ground Beef Recipes

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 slices bacon, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch pieces
1 onion, coarsely chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped (1 1/2 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 pounds ground beef chuck
2 tablespoons fine cornmeal, or masa harina
1 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar
Chopped jalapeno, chopped onion or scallion, grated cheddar cheese, lime wedges, and sour cream, for serving

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, cook bacon over medium heat until just beginning to brown, about 4 minutes. Add onion and garlic, and cook for 30 seconds. Add paprika, cumin, oregano, cayenne, salt, pepper, and ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, and breaking up the meat with the side of the spoon, until the beef is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in 3 cups water, cornmeal, and vinegar, and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid thickens, about 20 minutes. It may be necessary to add a little water to thin the chili. Serve hot, garnished with desired toppings.
