Really quick and easy donuts made from ingredients you probably already have. My 3 year old loves these because he can have them whenever he wants. There's hardly any waiting time. Use any topping you want. Our favorite is powdered sugar!

2 tablespoons white vinegar
⅜ cup milk
2 tablespoons shortening
½ cup white sugar
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 quart oil for deep frying
½ cup confectioners' sugar for dusting

Steps:

  • Stir the vinegar into the milk, and let stand for a few minutes until thick.
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well blended. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternating with the vinegar and milk. Roll dough out on a floured surface to 1/3 inch thickness. Cut into doughnuts using a donut cutter. Let stand for about 10 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a large deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry doughnuts in the hot oil until golden, turning over once. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners' sugar while they are still warm, and serve immediately.

8 cups chicken broth
1/3 cup sugar
4 cups vinegar, preferably molasses vinegar
1 tablespoon salt
3 tablespoons finely ground black pepper
3 tablespoons black soy sauce
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 pound squid, cleaned and sliced into matchsticks
1 pound shrimp, cleaned, deveined and diced
1 cake tofu, sliced into 1/4-inch cubes
1 cup bamboo shoots, drained and sliced into matchsticks
1 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced thinly
2 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon dark sesame oil
2 scallions, minced

Steps:

  • Combine the broth, sugar, vinegar, salt, black pepper and soy sauce and bring nearly to a boil. Add 1 cup of this broth to the cornstarch, whisk well and then slowly and carefully stir this slurry into the soup. Reduce the heat to a simmer.
  • Add the squid, shrimp, tofu, bamboo shoots and mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes. Whisk the egg whites and sesame oil together and stir into the soup. Ladle into bowls, garnish with minced scallions and serve immediately.

I spent weeks perfecting a classic Tiramisu recently...cooking the zabaglione over a hot stove & beating my brains out. Then our hero Sam, The Cooking Guy, arrives to end my pain with a recipe you won't find in Bon Appetit. I guarantee a smile attack on just about anybody at your table with a pulse. I give up! Thanks, Sam.

1 cup mascarpone cheese, softened
2 tablespoons whipping cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
6 small powdered sugar doughnuts, sliced in half
6 tablespoons Hersheys Chocolate Syrup (or chocolate fudge ice cream topping)
1/4 cup Kahlua
cocoa powder (to garnish)
1 dash whipped cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Blend cheese, powdered sugar and cream until smooth.
  • Put 1 T. Hershey's syrup in bottom of a martini glass.
  • Dip cut side of each doughnut in Kahlua.
  • On top of chocolate, place 1 doughnut half, then a big tablespoon of cheese mix, then another doughnut half, then more cheese mix.
  • Dust with cocoa powder.
  • Refrigerate about an hour before serving. Add a squirt of whipped cream on top if it makes you happy.
  • Smile!
