Hot Spiced Milk image

This soothing beverage is fragrant, warming, and delightful. Make it with half rice milk and half soy milk for a rich but not-too-sweet taste. (This recipe is from the book "The Vegan Sourcebook".)

1 cup plain soymilk
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 pinch saffron thread
sugar, as desired

Steps:

  • Combine the milk, cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, and saffron in a small saucepan and whisk them together.
  • Place over medium heat, stirring occasionally until hot.
  • Pour the milk through a fine strainer to filter out the spices (you can put the strainer over your cup or mug and pour the hot milk directly into it).
  • Stir in as much sugar as necessary to achieve the desired sweetness.
  • Serve hot.

When my boys had a hard time getting to sleep I came up with this warm milk to help calm them. Even now, years after they began drinking it, they still enjoy it during homework, or after coming in from a cold day of play. I, too, have enjoyed it after a long day's work. I hope you enjoy this recipe as well for years to come.

Steps:

  • In a large mug, stir together the milk, vanilla and sugar. Heat in the microwave on full power for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stir in nutmeg, and serve hot.

I received this recipe from a lady in our church who is an excellent cook. She has shared several slow-cooker recipes with us. We really enjoy the sweet-tangy flavor of this warm citrus punch. -Mandy Wright, Springville, Utah

2-1/2 quarts water
2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups orange juice
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1 cinnamon stick (3 inches)
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves

Steps:

  • In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the water, sugar and juices. Place cinnamon stick and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with kitchen string to form a bag. Place in slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours or until heated through. Discard spice bag.

3 whole cloves
lemon peel from one lemon
1/8 teaspoon saffron
1 tablespoon black tea, brewed
nutmeg (optional)

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan place the milk, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, lemon peel, and saffron. Bring to a boil. then remove from the heat and stir in the tea. Allow to steep for 15 minutes. Strain into cups and serve warm. Top with nutmeg if desired.
