SMOTHERED SALISBURY STEAK "TIPS"

Smothered Salisbury Steak

A quick and easy recipe for Salisbury Steak "tips" made from ground beef smothered in gravy and onions in a quick and easy weeknight meal.

Provided by Mandy Rivers | South Your Mouth

Time 40m

Yield 4 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

1.5 pounds ground beef
Salt, pepper and garlic powder
1 large onion, halved and sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 1/3 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cut ground beef into large chunks and season liberally on all sides with salt, pepper and garlic.
  • Add seasoned meat to hot skillet and let sear for several minutes before turning. Add onion slices around the perimeter of the skillet and season with salt and pepper.
  • Once the meat has seared on one side, gently flip so that it can sear on the other sides as well. If you try to mess with the meat too much it will crumble. By letting it sear on the top, bottom and whichever other sides you can manage, it will keep its shape.
  • Gently stir and turn onions as you sear the meat. Once meat is seared on all (or most) sides, push the meat and onions to one side of the pan.
  • Tilt pan slightly so that the pan drippings come to the empty side of the pan. Whisk flour into pan drippings and cook for 1-2 minutes or until slightly browned. Set skillet back down flat and reduce heat to low.
  • Add brown gravy packet to a small bowl then whisk in water. Slowly pour gravy mixture into skillet and stir to incorporate.
  • Cover and simmer over low heat for 15-20 minutes or until meat is cooked through.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.

SALISBURY STEAK

Salisbury Steak image

Treat your family to Ree Drummond's Salisbury Steak recipe from The Pioneer Woman on Food Network; smother the beef patties in gravy for a rib-sticking meal.

Provided by Ree Drummond : Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 35m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon ketchup
2 teaspoons dry mustard
4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 cube beef bouillon, crumbled (or powdered beef base)
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 whole onion, halved and thinly sliced (or diced if you prefer)
2 cups beef broth, more if needed for thinning
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon seasoning sauce, such as Kitchen Bouquet, optional
4 dashes Worcestershire
1 teaspoon cornstarch, optional
Salt and pepper

Steps:

  • For the meat mixture: Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon and some salt and pepper. Knead until all combined. Form into 4 to 6 oval patties, and then make lines across the patties to give them a "steak" appearance.
  • Fry the patties in a skillet with the butter and oil over medium-high heat on both sides until no longer pink in the middle. Remove from the skillet and pour off any excess grease.
  • For the gravy: Reduce the heat to medium and add in the sliced onions. Stir and cook until golden brown and somewhat soft, for several minutes. Add the beef stock, ketchup, seasoning sauce, if using, and the Worcestershire. Then combine the cornstarch with a little beef broth and add to the sauce if using. Stir and cook to reduce.
  • Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper and more broth if needed for thinning. Then return the patties to the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the top and let them simmer and heat back up for a couple of minutes.

MIDWEST SALISBURY STEAK

Midwest Salisbury Steak image

I was tired of boring, tasteless Salisbury steak recipes, so I created this one myself. Use good ground sirloin, and it'll tastes wonderful and you won't have any grease to drain from the patties once they've browned. Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. Simply delightful!

Provided by Leann Tucek

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Beef     Salisbury Steak Recipes

Time 1h5m

Yield 5

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 pound ground sirloin
½ cup panko bread crumbs
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons milk
½ (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
3 tablespoons butter
2 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 sweet onion, sliced
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 ½ cups beef stock
1 cup water
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Mix ground sirloin, panko bread crumbs, egg, milk, and 1/2 packet onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper together in a large bowl; shape into 5 patties.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties in hot skillet until browned, 3 to 5 minutes per side.
  • Melt butter in a separate skillet over medium-high heat. Saute mushrooms and onion in melted butter until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir flour and remaining dry onion soup mix into the mushroom mixture; cook and stir until flour is integrated fully, about 1 minute. Stream beef stock and water over the mushroom mixture while stirring continually; bring to a simmer, reduce heat to medium, and cook, stirring frequently, until the liquid thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Lie the browned steaks into the gravy; simmer until steaks are firm and gray in the center, about 30 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
