VEGETARIAN HOT DOGS



Vegetarian Hot Dogs image

Make your own vegan hot dogs!

Yield 9 hot dogs

Number Of Ingredients 17

5 Tbsp (30g) almond meal
9 oz (250g) firm tofu
2 Tbsp soy sauce
3 Tbsp vegetable oil
½ medium onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbsp smoked paprika OR several generous dashes liquid smoke
1½ tsp granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
¾ tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground mustard
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp cumin
1⅛ cup vital wheat gluten
1 tsp cornstarch

Steps:

  • Crumble tofu into the bowl of a food processor.
  • In a liquid measuring cup, measure the 2 Tbsp soy sauce and add enough water to get to the 100mL line. Add to food processor.
  • Add almond meal, oil, onion, garlic, paprika/liquid smoke, sugar, salt, pepper, coriander, mustard, nutmeg, cardamom, and cumin to the processor and pulse until smooth, about two minutes. Pour into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add vital wheat gluten and cornstarch to the mixture and stir to combine. Knead gently - the mixture will be soft but you'll see strands of gluten forming.
  • Divide the dough into nine equal pieces. Roll each into a rough hot dog shape (doesn't have to be perfect). Wrap each dog in parchment paper and then aluminum foil. Twist ends of the foil shut.
  • In a large pot with a steamer insert or basket, bring enough water to just under the steamer to a boil. Arrange your hot dogs in the steamer - close together is fine, and it's okay if they're touching.
  • Cover and steam for 45 minutes. Turn off heat and let cool in the pot, uncovered.
  • To cook, unwrap hot dogs and simmer in water for five minutes, or fry in a frying pan, or throw 'em on the grill until hot and pretty with grill marks!
  • Serve on buns with ketchup, mustard, relish, diced onions, or your favorite hot dog topping.

33 ounces canned pork & beans ((3) 11-ounce cans)
12 ounces hot dogs (*any variety, sliced into small slices. This was one package of Bar S brand.)
1 medium onion (sliced thinly)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon yellow mustard (prepared)
¼ teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
1 teaspoon celery salt
¼ cup light brown sugar

Steps:

  • On a cutting board, slice onions thinly; set aside. Slice hot dogs into bite-sized pieces.
  • Over medium heat, add butter to a large skillet and sauté onions and hot dogs for 3 minutes. Add in the beans, mustard, spices, and sugar; simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Transfer beans and hot dogs to a casserole dish and bake for 40 minutes stirring occasionally.

1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup onion, chopped
3/4 cup green pepper, chopped
1 lb hot dog, sliced
1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans
1/3 cup chili sauce
1/3 cup catsup
1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional)
1 (8 ounce) can biscuits
3/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)

Steps:

  • Cook onion and green pepper in 1 tablespoons butter.
  • Stir in hot dogs, beans, chili sauce and catsup.
  • For a sweeter flavor, add brown sugar.
  • Simmer 2 minutes.
  • Spoon hot mixture into an ungreased 9 inch square pan or 12 X 8 pan.
  • Separate biscuit dough into 10 biscuits;.
  • Arrange 10 biscuits over hot meat mixture;.
  • Sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until biscuits are golden.

6 hot dogs sliced in rounds
3/4 c chopped onions
1 1/2 tsp butter
1 1/2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp all spice
1/4 tsp black pepper
16 oz can of b & m baked beans
1/3 c ketchup
2 Tbsp brown sugar
6 oz cheddar cheese, shredded

Steps:

  • 1. Brown onion in butter, add hotdogs and brown. Add spices and mix well. Pour the beans in a baking dish (2 QUART) and add the ketchup and brown sugar and mix well. Add the hotdog mix to beans and stir. Add cheese on top and bake for 30 mins. Serve with french fries or potato wedges.
