Easy black bean burgers for everyone! You don't need to follow the recipe or amounts exactly. I never do. Serve with your favorite burger fixings and sweet potato fries.

1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
⅓ cup chopped sweet onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
3 baby carrots, grated
¼ cup minced green bell pepper
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon warm water
3 tablespoons chile-garlic sauce (such as Sriracha®), or to taste
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®)
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 slices whole-wheat bread, torn into small crumbs
¾ cup unbleached flour, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet.
  • Mash black beans in a bowl; add onion, garlic, carrots, and green bell pepper. Mix.
  • Whisk cornstarch, water, chile-garlic sauce, chili powder, cumin, seafood seasoning, salt, and black pepper together in a separate small bowl. Stir cornstarch mixture into black bean mixture.
  • Mix whole-wheat bread into bean mixture. Stir flour, 1/4 cup at a time, into bean mixture until a sticky batter forms.
  • Spoon 'burger-sized' mounds of batter onto the prepared baking sheet, about a 3/4-inch thickness per mound. Shape into burgers.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cooked in the center and crisp in the outside, about 10 minutes on each side.

You will never want to eat frozen veggie burgers again. These are so easy, and you'll be proud to have created such a vegetarian delight.

1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
½ green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
½ onion, cut into wedges
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1 egg
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon Thai chili sauce or hot sauce
½ cup bread crumbs

Steps:

  • If grilling, preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil. If baking, preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and lightly oil a baking sheet.
  • In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork until thick and pasty.
  • In a food processor, finely chop bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Then stir into mashed beans.
  • In a small bowl, stir together egg, chili powder, cumin, and chili sauce.
  • Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans. Mix in bread crumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together. Divide mixture into four patties.
  • If grilling, place patties on foil, and grill about 8 minutes on each side. If baking, place patties on baking sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

This is a low-calorie quick black bean burger and they are super cheap to make. This is loosely based on the Black Bean Burgers from Lindsay Nixon's Happy Herbivore website.

2 2/3 cups cooked black beans or 15 1/2 ounces canned black beans, drained and rinsed
1/3 cup old-fashioned oatmeal, coarsely ground or 1/3 cup instant oatmeal
1/2 tablespoon fiesta uncle chris' gourmet steak seasoning or 1/2 tablespoon steak seasoning, of your choice
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke

Steps:

  • Preheat Oven to 425°F.
  • Use either the cooked black beans or 1 15.5 oz can but not both and use either instant oatmeal or coarsely grind the old-fashioned oats in a food processor or coffee grinder and use those.
  • Drain and rinse the black beans.
  • Mash the black beans coarsely. You want some half beans and bean pieces left. If you mash them too much your burgers will fall apart.
  • Add the spices and liquid smoke and mix to combine.
  • Add the oatmeal and mix until it has a uniform texture.
  • Measure 1/3 cup portions and shape into patties.
  • Place your patties on a greased or parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 7-10 minutes until color changes and they appear crispy.
  • Carefully flip burgers.
  • Bake until remaining side appears crispy. It should take about 7-10 minutes.
