This comes from my "Taste of Home" magazine (Apr/May 99). I had always just opened a can of Manwich for dinner, but one day I dared to make "real" sloppy joes, and well, there's no going back now. Trust me, they're fabulous!

2 lbs ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 stalks celery & leaves, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1 2/3 cups canned crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon steak sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
8 -10 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook beef, onion, celery and green pepper until the meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender; drain.
  • Add the next nine ingredients; mix well.
  • Simmer, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Spoon 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun.

1/2 cup chopped onion

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the beef, onion, celery and green pepper until meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender; drain. , Stir in the next nine ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Spoon about 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun. Freeze option: Place individual portions cooled meat mixture in freezer containers and freeze. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Microwave, covered, on high in a microwave-safe dish until heated through, gently stirring and adding a little broth / water if necessary.

4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. I purchased a Women's Day Magazine entitled Slow Cooking and I have been posted several recipes from this magazine. I have to say not one of the recipes didn't get a FANTASTIC! rating.

3 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/4 cups ketchup
1 cup chopped red bell pepper

2 teaspoons chili powder

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef, onion and garlic in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat in two batches, stirring to break up clumps of meat. Drain and discard fat.
  • In slow cooker, combine ketchup, bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard and chili powder. Stir in beef mixture.
