I often bake these wheat and gluten free healthy dog treats for my three Golden Retrievers, Mac, Maesie and Matilda. I love to create treat and cookie recipes especially for them using ingredients, I know are healthy alternatives to the ingredients in most store purchased dog treats. I blog about these healthy recipes on my doggy blog, http://3mbakery.com. As this recipe is gluten and wheat free and working with flours which lack gluten can be tricky (the dough crumbles and pulls apart easily), with a little effort it all comes together for a great result. Your fur-kids will definitely love it if you try it for them!

2 cups brown rice flour
2 cups gluten-free oats
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup carrot, finely grated
3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup water
3 tablespoons molasses

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350° F and line two cookie trays with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the rice flour, rolled oats, and cinnamon.
In a small bowl, combine the grated carrot, apple sauce, eggs, water and molasses.
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the carrot/apple mixture.
Mix thoroughly together until it is well combined and is a semi-moist consistency.
Using 2 teaspoons, drop teaspoon sized clusters onto the cookie tray.
Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove trays from the oven and leave the clusters to rest on the cookie trays for 5 - 10 minutes.
Remove clusters from the cookie trays and place on wire cooling racks to cool completely.

My dogs--especially my puppy, Tango Foxtrot--loved carrots, apples, and peanut butter. So, for his first birthday, I combined Tango's favorite flavors into a special treat just for him. Make sure to use a natural peanut butter that does not contain added salt, sugar, or other ingredients. Keep extra treats stored in the fridge.

1 ¼ cups grated carrots
1 ¼ cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup grated apple
½ cup natural peanut butter
2 eggs

Steps:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Mix carrots, oats, and apple together in a large bowl. Whisk peanut butter and eggs until thoroughly combined in a second bowl. Pour into the oat mixture and stir until thoroughly combined.
Drop 1 1/2 tablespoonfuls of batter onto the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each treat with your hands until they are 1/2-inch thick.
Bake in the preheated oven until treats are firm to the touch and begin to brown on the bottom, 15 to 20 minutes. Allow to cool a few minutes on the baking sheets before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Ingredients

1 cup oatmeal
1 (6 ounce) can tuna in vegetable oil or 1 (6 ounce) can flaked turkey, undrained
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup water

Steps:

Using a food processor or blender, grind oatmeal until it becomes a coarse flour.
Remove to a small bowl and reserve.
Place tuna or turkey in processor and oil and blend.
Add the rest of the ingredients, including the oatmeal, and pulse until mixture forms a ball.
Continue to pulse for 2 to 3 minutes.
Knead on a floured surface until a soft ball is formed.
Roll out to 1/8 " to 1/4 " thickness.
Cut into whatever shapes you prefer.
Bake on a lightly greased baking sheet for 20 to 25 minutes at 350°F.
Cool completely.
