BACKYARD APPLE TREE CRISP

- 1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Generously butter an 8-by-8-inch baking dish or another 2-quart baking dish and set aside.2. To make the filling: In a medium bowl, toss together the apples, lemon juice, and sugar. Transfer the apples to the baking dish and set aside.3. To make the topping: In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Using your fingers or a pastry blender, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.4. Sprinkle the topping over the apples. Bake in the center of the oven until the crisp is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges, 35 to 45 minutes. Remove and cool in the pan for 15 minutes. - Spray 9x13 baking dish. Peel and slice apples and put in baking dish. The dish will be heaping full but the level will go way down as it cooks. Sprinkle with about 1 tsp of cinnamon. Mix butter and sugar. A pastry cutter works very well. Add flour and ½ Tbsp. of cinnamon and mix well again. Spread over apples. Bake at 350* for about an hour or until apples are tender. Serve as is or with Cool Whip or vanilla ice cream. Makes 12 servings

Simple, old-fashioned apple crisp. If you want something simple and homemade on hand, you can double the filling recipe (I use a 5-pound bag of Granny Smith apples) and freeze half of it.

- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for filling in a bowl; transfer to the prepared baking dish.
- Combine brown sugar, flour, oats, butter, and cinnamon for topping in a large bowl. Sprinkle on top of filling.
- Bake in the preheated oven until golden and bubbly, about 1 hour.
