This is found in the July 2010 magazine under a section called "Fast Summer Meals". I am posting it to make it easy to find. I can't wait to try this.

1/2 lb Italian sausage
1/2 lb ground beef
2 granny smith apples
8 slices bacon
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon honey
4 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Core and finely chop one apple.
  • Mix sausage, beef and chopped apple and shape into burgers.
  • Grill directly over medium high heat for 4-5 minutes per side (until pink no longer remains).
  • While burgers are cooking, cook bacon and toast hamburger buns.
  • In a small bowl stir together mayonnaise, mustard and honey.
  • Put mayo-honey-mustard spread on a toasted bun and top with cooked burger.
  • Core and slice an additional green apple.
  • Place 2 slices of apple and 2 slices of bacon on top of burger.
  • Top with other bun half and enjoy!

ULTIMATE STEAKHOUSE BURGER

This is by far the best burger recipe I have tried. It is a recipe I clipped from a magazine--sorry folks, just can't remember which one. TRY THESE you'll never fix a plain hamburger again. They are so tender and juicy and the bacon fat adds just a hint of smoky flavor. I don't think you'll be sorry!

8 slices bacon
1 -2 slice white bread, crusts removed, cut into 1 inch pieces. (about 1 cup)
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 lbs of 85- 90% lean ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 large garlic cloves, very finely minced
vegetable oil, for grill rack

Steps:

  • Fry bacon in skillet. Place 3 tablespoons of bacon fat into heatproof bowl and set in refrigerator while preparing other ingredients.
  • Put bread in bowl, add milk, and let mixture sit about 5 minutes. Using a fork, mash bread and milk till smooth paste forms.
  • Break up beef into small bits into a medium size bowl. Season with salt and pepper, then add garlic, bread paste, and reserved chilled bacon fat. Lightly knead all ingredients to mix and incorporate. Divide into 4 patties.
  • Oil cooking grate and grill burgers over a very hot fire, without squeezing down on them, until well seared on both sides (7-10 mins depending on preference for doneness). Top burgers with bacon previously cooked. Serve on buns.

1/2 cup chopped green onions or 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
2 tablespoons fine dry breadcrumbs
2 red serrano peppers, seeded and finely chopped
3 canned chipotle chiles in adobo, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 lb lean ground beef
4 wheat hamburger buns, split (1-inch-thick) or 8 slices bread (1-inch-thick)
roasted red pepper catsup, roasted garlic catsup (optional) or other purchased flavored catsup (optional)
4 slices tomatoes (optional)
sliced red onion (optional)
red serrano pepper (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine green onion or white onion, bread crumbs, serrano peppers, chipotle peppers, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add beef; mix well. Shape meat mixture into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.
  • For a charcoal grill, place patties on the grill rack directly over medium coals. Grill, uncovered, for 14 to 18 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the side of a patty registers 160°F, turning once.
  • For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place patties on the grill rack; cover and grill as above.
  • Grill or toast buns or bread. Serve burgers on grilled or toasted buns or bread topped, if desired, with flavored catsup, tomato slices, red onion slices, and serrano peppers.

1/2 cup American cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons onions, chopped
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 lb ground beef
5 slices bacon
5 hamburger buns, split
1 leaf lettuce (optional)
tomatoes, slices (optional)
onion, slices (optional)

Steps:

  • In small bowl, combine the egg, cheese, onion, soy sauce, ketchup and pepper.
  • Crumble beef over mixture and mix well.
  • Shape into five patties.
  • Wrap a bacon strip around each; secure with a toothpick.
  • Grill patties, uncovered, over medium-hot heat for 5-6 minutes on each side or until meat is no longer pink.
  • Discard toothpicks.
  • Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato and onion, if desired.

I love the taste of peanut butter and bacon together, and here's a great way to have it on a hamburger! I found these once in a restaurant, and have made them at home ever since.

6 slices bacon, long strips cut in half
2 lbs ground beef
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried onion flakes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Tabasco sauce (optional) or cayenne, to taste (optional)
1/4 cup chunky peanut butter
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 garlic cloves, squished through a garlic press
3 tablespoons chicken broth (or more, to desired thickness)

Steps:

  • Cut the bacon strips in half so you have 12 pieces, each one approximately 4 inches long; fry the bacon well, keeping the strips as straight as you can (a bacon weight works well for that), then set aside.
  • Drain the pan of fat but don't wipe out the pan; turn the heat off- you'll come back to this pan later.
  • In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, Worcestershire, dried onion, salt, garlic powder, and pepper (and Tabasco/cayenne, if using).
  • In a separate bowl mix together the peanut butter, soy sauce, squished garlic, and chicken broth- this is your grilling sauce; if it's too thick still, add broth until it's a consistency you like (I like it thicker).
  • Form the beef mixture into six patties.
  • Reheat your pan and cook them as you would regular burgers, but brush them on both sides occasionally with the marinade.
  • You can add more chicken broth if you want the grilling sauce to go further, or a bit melted butter.
  • Now for you low carbers, remember, peanuts are not low-carb, so go easy with the grilling sauce; it'll still taste wonderful if you don't use all of it up on the burgers!
  • Low-carb serving: top it with the bacon, either in strips or crumbled, and enjoy; you can add lettuce and tomato if you like, but I love it just the way it is.
  • High-carb serving: eat it on a bun with lettuce and tomato and cheese.
