CRISP BUTTON COOKIES

- In a large bowl, cream butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk flour, salt and cardamom; gradually beat into creamed mixture. If desired, divide dough into portions; tint with food coloring. Refrigerate, covered, 2 hours or until easy to handle., Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. round cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. With the top of a 1/4-cup measuring cup dipped in flour, press an indented edge into each cookie. Using a plastic straw, cut out four holes near the center of the cookie., Bake 10-15 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Lace licorice through the holes in each button; trim licorice.

- In a bowl cream butter, cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until smooth. 2. In a medium bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir till soft dough forms. Divide dough into sections. Tint each with a different food color. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out dough and use circle cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Use straw to make holes. Place cookies 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. 4. Bake cookies for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool and store in an airtight container.

These are whole wheat sugar cookies that my roommates love -- that's why I named them Room 157 sugar cookies!

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a large bowl, mix the white sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. In a separate bowl, mix the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix the flour mixture into the sugar mixture. Roll into balls, and arrange 2 to 3 inches apart on cookie sheets.
- Bake 9 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Cool 5 minutes on cookie sheet before transferring to wire racks.

BASIC SUGAR COOKIES - TRIED AND TRUE SINCE 1960
This is my backwoods Mississippi grandmother's own customized sugar cookie dough recipe. Royal icing is recommended, but these are also wonderful without icing. Very light and buttery. My mom stuck with it, and we grew up eating the raw cookie dough before snacking on the cookies at holidays. This will always be my basic cookie dough recipe. It's very quick and easy to make a batch of this dough and to customize. These are common ingredients easily found in most sparsely-stocked kitchens. You don't have to be a master chef to get a batch of these cookies to turn out well.

Steps:
- Mix self-rising flour, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt thoroughly in a bowl; beat at least 5 minutes. Refrigerate dough at least 2 hours to overnight.
- Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C).
- Roll dough out on a floured work surface using a lightly floured rolling pin; cut cookies out with cutters. Place cookies onto baking sheets.
- Bake in the preheated oven until cookie bottoms are lightly golden brown, about 15 minutes.
