"We live about an hour from the nearest major city, so shopping trips can be few and far between. I often buy cabbage rather than lettuce for salads, because it stores longer," Deborah says.

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons garlic salt, optional
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon
6 cups shredded cabbage

Steps:

  • In a jar with tight-fitting lid, combine the vinegar, oil, garlic salt if desired, sugar and tarragon. Place cabbage in a large bowl. Drizzle with dressing; toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

1/2 cup chopped onion
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine cabbage, green pepper and onion. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar and salt. Pour over cabbage mixture and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours. Stir in bacon just before serving.

1/4 lb bacon
2 cups onions, chopped
1 garlic clove, chopped
1/2 cup tarragon white wine vinegar

Steps:

  • Cut the bacon into tiny bits, fry it in a big deep frying pan when crisp remove bacon to a bowl.
  • Cut up the onion and garlic and fry them in the bacon fat.
  • When they are brown, pour in the vinegar.
  • Bring it just up to a simmer, add all the cabbage and bacon, toss it as you would a salad, and serve it.
  • The cabbage doesn't cook, but it wilts a little under the hot vinegar.

I've enjoyed the common Chicken Noodle Ramen Seasoning recipe for years. However, I do NOT enjoy serving MSG to my family. So, I came up with a way to revise the recipe, still make it tasty and flavorful and fresh for my family. This is very similar to the original recipe.

1 cabbage, head of
4 green onions, chopped with tops
1 broccoli, head of (optional)
3 carrots (if desired...adds nice color)
1 cup slivered almonds, toasted
1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted
1 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (I use Braggs because it has the Mother ( )
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning
1 1/2 tablespoons mexican blend seasoning (Morton & Basset)

Steps:

  • Toast your seeds and nuts and set aside.
  • Shred cabbage if not buying store bought shredded.
  • Shred broccoli and carrots (if desired).
  • Combine cabbage, onions, broccoli and carrots and set aside.
  • For the Dressing:.
  • Combine Olive Oil, Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Pepper and Spices.
  • Whisk or shake till mixed well.
  • Before serving, pour the dressing on the cabbage mixture. Add the nuts/seeds. Also consider adding cooked chicken if desired (my favorite way of eating it).
  • Note: Regular white vinegar is fine.
  • Note: I'm guessing on the amount of Poultry and Mexican Blend because I just add a little at a time until it tastes the way I want. In the past, I have also substituted portions of the sugar out for Xylitol and/or Stevia with good results.
  • Note: This recipe could probably serve 8 people as their main meal if you add chicken. Its a very large recipe.
