Steps:
- In large bowl, beat butter, egg and flour with electric mixer on medium speed (or with wooden spoon) until well mixed. Wrap dough in plastic wrap; refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours.
- Heat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with cooking parchment paper. On floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Using playing card as template, cut dough into rectangles; place on cookie sheets. Reroll dough and cut additional rectangles.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until set. Immediately remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. (If only 1 cookie sheet is available, cool 10 minutes between batches.) Cool cookies completely, about 30 minutes.
- In medium bowl, beat meringue powder and cold water with electric mixer on medium speed until peaks form. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until soft peaks form, about 1 minute. Spoon one-third of icing into decorating bag fitted with fine tip; pipe outline of playing card onto cookies. Let stand to harden, about 30 minutes.
- Thin remaining icing with water until it becomes a spreadable consistency. Spoon icing onto each cookie, spreading with back of spoon to fill in space inside outline. Let stand to harden completely, about 30 minutes.
- Draw card details with edible markers.

URBAN LEGEND CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
You may have heard this story...a woman asks to buy a cookie recipe and is told it will cost 'two-fifty.' She thinks this means $2.50, but then she gets her credit card bill back and finds out it is $250.00. Outraged, she spreads the recipe far and wide to try and get her money's worth. I first heard this story 6 years ago and was given a recipe on a sheet of paper which bore the date '1986.' The supposed originator of the recipe was a well-known cookie company. I have since heard this tale again several times, with the recipe originating from different upscale department stores. True story? Who knows, but it's a darn good cookie. Here's my version.

GIANT CRINKLED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
You might think there's nothing new to learn about chocolate chip cookies, but this recipe by the baker and blogger Sarah Kieffer will prove you wonderfully wrong. The easy trick of banging the pan a few times during baking, causing the cookies to "fall," produces rippled edges that shatter in your mouth and a center that is soft and full of chocolate. Make sure to follow her instructions about freezing the dough and the size of the balls.

Steps:
- Adjust an oven rack to the middle position. Line 2 baking sheets with aluminum foil, parchment paper or nonstick baking mats.
- In a small bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda and salt.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, beat the butter on medium until creamy. Add the granulated and brown sugars and beat on medium until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla and 2 tablespoons water, and mix on low to combine. Add the flour mixture, and mix on low until combined. Add the chocolate and mix on low into the batter. (At this point, the dough can be refrigerated for several hours or overnight.)
- Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Form the dough into 3 1/2-ounce (100-gram) balls (a heaping 1/3 cup each). Place 4 balls an equal distance apart on a prepared pan, and transfer to the freezer for 15 minutes before baking. After you put the first baking sheet in the oven, put the second one in the freezer.
- Place the chilled baking sheet in the oven and bake 10 minutes, until the cookies are puffed slightly in the center. Lift the baking sheet and let it drop down against the oven rack, so the edges of the cookies set and the inside falls back down. (This will feel wrong, but trust me.) Bang it down, if necessary, to make the center fall.
- After the cookies puff up again, 2 to 3 minutes later, repeat lifting and dropping the pan, every 3 minutes, to create ridges around the edge of the cookie. Bake 16 to 18 minutes total, until the cookies have spread out, and the edges are golden brown, but the centers are much lighter and not fully cooked.
- Transfer the baking sheet to a wire rack; let cool before removing the cookies from the pan.
- Repeat with remaining cookies, using the first sheet pan for the third batch of cookies.

- Beat butter, sugar, egg and vanilla in large bowl until fluffy. Stir together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; add to butter mixture, blending well. Refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm enough to roll. Cut cardboard rectangle for pattern, 2-1/2 x 4 inches; wrap in plastic wrap.
- Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease cookie sheet or line with parchment paper. On lightly floured board or between two pieces of wax paper, roll out half of dough to 1/4-inch thickness. For each cookie, place pattern on dough; cut through dough around pattern with sharp paring knife. (Save dough trimmings and reroll for remaining cookies). Carefully place cutouts on prepared cookie sheet.
- Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet. (If cookies have lost their shape, trim irregular edges while cookies are still hot). Carefully transfer to wire rack. Repeat procedure with remaining dough.
- Prepare Decorative Frosting; spoon into pastry bag fitted with decorating tip. Pipe names or greetings onto cookies; decorate as desired.
