Number Of Ingredients 13

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cold butter, cubed
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup buttermilk
4 teaspoons grated orange zest
1 teaspoon orange extract
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, whisk the first 5 ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chocolate chips. In another bowl, mix milk, orange zest and extract until blended; stir into flour mixture just until moistened., Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 10 times. Divide dough in half. Pat each portion into an 8-in. circle. Cut each into 8 wedges. Place wedges on a greased baking sheet., In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon. Lightly brush scones with cream; sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Bake 15-17 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Found this recipe online and tweaked it a little to make it "more orangey." It's very easy and so good! The scones come out with a wonderful texture.

1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
2 ½ tablespoons orange zest
6 tablespoons orange juice
1 medium egg
1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon milk, or as needed
½ cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
4 teaspoons orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease with cooking spray.
  • Mix flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter. Mix in orange zest.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Whisk orange juice, egg, and vinegar together and pour into the flour mixture. Stir until moistened and sticky.
  • Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead gently about 10 times. Pat into a 6x8-inch rectangle. Cut rectangle into 4 squares; cut each square diagonally into 8 triangles. Arrange scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with milk and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  • Make the orange glaze while the scones are baking. Mix 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar and orange juice until thick and smooth; glaze should drip slowly off the back of a spoon. Mix in orange zest.
  • Dunk warm scones in the glaze to fully coat the tops. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup cold heavy cream
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
2/3 cup mini chocolate chips, or regular chips roughly chopped
for glaze: 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone liner. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and orange zest in a mixer with a paddle attachment. Cut the cold butter into small chunks and slowly add to the dry ingredients with the mixer on low. Mix until the butter is distributed and is pea-sized. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, cream, and orange juice. Turn the mixer on low and slowly add the cream mixture. Turn off the machine once added. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Add more flour to the top of the dough and pat it down to flatten into a circle about 8-9 inches in diameter. Cut into pieces like a pie. Separate the pieces and put them on the prepared pan. Bake 15-17 minutes. For the glaze: whisk together the orange juice and the powdered sugar until smooth. Drizzle over scones after they have cooled for a few minutes.

1 teaspoon baking powder
40 g unsalted butter
100 g chocolate
25 g icing sugar
140 ml milk
1/2 orange, zest of, freshly grated
2 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 7. Grease a baking sheet.
  • Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl. Add the butter, cut into small pieces and rub in with the fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  • Stir in the chocolate, sugar and orange rind.
  • Add the orange juice and milk and stir to make a soft dough.
  • Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to 2cm thick. Use a 6cm cutter to cut out rounds.
  • Transfer to the baking sheet and cook for 12 minutes until well risen and pale golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

This recipe is based on a recipe I slightly altered. It called for poppy seeds instead of the chocolate chips. I had already began making the recipe when I discovered my stash of poppy seeds had gone bad. So in an attempt to continue making the original recipe I subbed in mini-chocolate chips. I also used regular milk instead of cream and added baking powder to the list of ingredients. This recipe came out pretty darn good. It was even better the next morning.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup mini chocolate chip
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly grated orange rind
1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into pieces
1/3 cup milk
1 large egg
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
coarse sugar, for sprinkling the tops

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Combine the first eight ingredients and using a pastry cutter or fork make a coarse meal.
  • In a separate bowl combine the milk, egg, orange juice and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon just until blended. Turn the dough into a floured surface and knead slightly five or six times.
  • Roll the dough out to 3/4 inch thick and cut into rounds with a floured 2 inch biscuit cutter. Sprinkle tops with coarse sugar before baking.
  • Bake 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
