- Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt in a bowl. Blend in butter cubes with your fingertips or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir together egg and buttermilk in another bowl, then add to flour mixture, stirring with a fork until a dough forms.
- Gather dough into a ball, then turn out onto a floured surface and gently knead 7 or 8 times. Roll out dough with a floured rolling pin into a 1/2-inch-thick round and cut out as many biscuits as possible with biscuit cutter. Gather scraps and knead once, then pat out into a 1/2-inch-thick round and cut out more biscuits.
- Arrange biscuits 1 inch apart on baking sheet and brush tops and sides with melted butter. Stir together turbinado sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over biscuits (sugar will form a crust).
- Bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 15 minutes. Transfer biscuits to a rack and cool to warm, about 10 minutes.
BROWN SUGAR BISCUITS
These yummy rolls aren't really biscuits, but they're named after rolls I used to get at my local bakery. My family thinks they're sweet enough without icing, but a simple powdered sugar one would be nice.

- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet, or use parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in milk and vanilla. Knead briefly on a floured surface. Roll out into a large rectangle, 1/2 inch thick. Spread softened butter onto surface of dough. Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over butter. Roll tightly, and cut into 12 equal slices. Place on prepared baking sheet.
- Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

With the end of a wooden spoon handle, make a deep indentation in the center of each biscuit; fill with 1 teaspoon preserves. , Bake at 375° for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown. LIGHT CINNAMON VANILLA BREAKFAST BISCUITS (EGGLESS)
I made this adapting the recipe for biscuits on the Bisquick box, and really enjoyed the results. This is not a particularly sweet biscuit recipe, which makes it a wonderful accompaniment for your morning cuppa! You can experiment by adding chocolate chips in the batter for added sweetness, or increase the amount of sugar. This tastes best served warm with a pat of butter or maple syrup.

- Combine Bisquick, sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
- Stir in milk and vanilla and mix well.
- Spray a baking sheet lightly with cooking spray (a non-stick baking sheet works best; you don't need cooking spray then) and drop the batter onto it by heaping teaspoons, 1 inch apart.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Serve warm with a pat of butter or maple syrup.
