This is a recipe that my Grandmother used to keep me and my finicky cousins well fed! It is very kid friendly, and adults like it too!

1 pound lean ground beef
3 cups peeled and thinly sliced potatoes
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
½ cup chopped onion
¾ cup milk
salt to taste
freshly ground pepper, to taste
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef; drain fat.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, onion, milk, salt and pepper to taste.
Alternately layer the potatoes, soup mixture and meat in a 11x7 inch (2 quart) baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until potatoes are tender. Top with Cheddar cheese, and continue baking until cheese is melted.

5 potatoes
1 pound ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 (16 ounce) can green beans, drained
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
½ cup warm milk
1 egg, beaten
2 cloves garlic, chopped
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Steps:

Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes; drain. Set aside to cool in a large bowl.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef and onion in the hot skillet until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Stir green beans and tomato soup into the ground beef mixture; transfer to prepared casserole dish.
Mash the cooled potatoes with milk, egg, garlic, pepper, and salt; spoon in mounds over the ground beef mixture. Sprinkle Cheddar cheese over the potatoes.
Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted and edges of dish begin to brown, 25 to 30 minutes.

A simple meat and taters casserole; very old recipe; everything is kind of from scratch. I am sure you could use instant potatoes and canned beans. There are instructions on what to do if you want biscuits on this. In the old days they did that a lot. Just use your own biscuit recipe if you want to add them. This is going to be bland. Mid Westerners like their food that way; add more spices if you like.

1 lb ground beef
1 onion, medium, chopped
3/4 salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can tomato soup
1/2 lb green beans, cooked and drained
6 potatoes, cooked
1/2 cup milk, warm
1 egg
1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Steps:

Lightly brown ground beef and onions; drain fat.
Add salt, pepper, tomato soup, and green beans.
Pour into a greased 1-1/2 quart casserole.
Mash hot potatoes; add salt and pepper to taste.
Add warm milk and egg; mix.
Drop mashed potatoes in mounds on top of meat mixture; spread if desired.
Add shredded cheddar cheese on top, or mix into potatoes.
Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until hot and bubbly.
If adding biscuits, cook for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit; add biscuits on top; turn oven up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit; bake 15 or 20 more minutes until biscuits are golden.
