The Best Cod Fish Tacos image

Spicy Cod Fish Tacos with Cilantro Slaw and a Creamy Fish Sauce.

Provided by Layla

Categories     Dinner

Number Of Ingredients 21

1 lb skinless cod fillet
2 tbsp oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp ground cumin
salt to taste
1/4 cup greek yogurt
2 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp paprika
Salt to taste
1 cup purple cabbage, shredded
3/4 cup carrots, shredded
1/3 cup frozen corn, thawed
2 tbsp jalapenos, chopped
1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
3 tbsp greek yogurt
1 tsp lemon juice
Salt to taste
6-8 corn tortillas

Steps:

  • To marinate the fish, combine oil, lemon juice, paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin, and salt. Add the fish fillet and coat well. Marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile make the sauce by combining the yogurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, paprika, and salt. Mix them until creamy and smooth and set aside.
  • Combine the "to make slaw" ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
  • Heat a skillet and place the marinated fish. Sear the fish and cook for 3-5 minutes until the fish is completely done. Remove the fish fillets to a plate and break them into chunks.
  • To assemble the tortillas; char the corn tortillas on an open flame. Place the tortilla on a plate, add some chunks of fish, add a tablespoon of slaw and drizzle the prepared sauce on top.
  • Garnish with jalapenos and cilantro before serving.

FORT WORTH FISH TACOS

Fort Worth Fish Tacos image

If you're a fan of fish tacos, then you'll be a fan of this recipe! The batter for the fish is great. And, the cilantro cream sauce is terrific. Each bite is delightful!

Provided by Paula Todora

Categories     Fish

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 18

8 boneless fish fillets - about 3 ounces each.
2 tsp salt
2 tsp hot sauce (I use Louisiana hot sauce)
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 c mayonnaise
5 oz plain greek yogurt
4 small limes, cut into wedges
1 c flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
dash(es) cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 c dark beer
2 qt peanut oil for frying
8 small flour tortillas
1/4 head green cabbage, shredded
1 jar(s) ready made salsa

Steps:

  • 1. Place fish on plate and sprinkle with salt and hot sauce; cover and refrigerate a few minutes while making cilantro cream sauce. In a small bowl or large measuring cup, combine cream cheese, 2 T. cilantro, mayonnaise, yogurt and 1 T. of fresh lime juice; mix well, cover and refrigerate while making beer batter for fish.
  • 2. In a large bowl combine flour, salt, garlic powder, cayenne, pepper and beer; mix well with a whisk.
  • 3. In a large frying pan heat oil on medium high heat just until hot but not smoking. Remove fish from refrigerator; dip in beer batter and fry 3 at a time, turning when golden (approximately 2 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness); drain and keep warm. Repeat until all fish is cooked; cover and keep warm.
  • 4. Heat flour tortillas and cover to keep warm. Remove cilantro cream sauce from refrigerator to serve. Assemble tacos by placing a fish fillet on a warm tortilla, top with cabbage, then cream sauce, salsa, the remaining cilantro and a squeeze of the remaining lime wedges.
  • 5. *Note: You can also make a great relish to top these off with using chopped jicama, avocado, red onion and whatever else you'd like-pickle in equal amounts of water and vinegar and a little sugar. Drain and put on top-wonderful!

FISH TACOS

Recipe video above. Fish marinated in classic Mexican fresh flavours, seared until golden, are perfect for tacos. The lightly pickled red cabbage is a perfect accompanied for the soft fish, a great texture contrast. A wonderful recipe for white fish fillets, you will NOT miss deep fried fish!

Time 50m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 lime, juiced
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup chopped cilantro
1 jalapeno pepper, diced
1 tablespoon ground ancho chile powder
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
salt and ground black pepper to taste
½ pound halibut fillets
8 corn tortillas
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 (8 ounce) jar salsa
1 cup shredded pepper Jack cheese
1 avocado, sliced

Steps:

  • Stir lime juice, olive oil, cilantro, jalapeno, chile powder, cumin, salt, and pepper together in a large bowl or resealable zip-top bag. Add halibut and marinate for 20 to 25 minutes. Do not over-marinate, as lime juice will start to 'cook' the fish.
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Drain marinade; grill fillets for 5 minutes. Turn and cook until fish flakes easily with a fork, about 2 minutes more.
  • Warm tortillas on the grill or stove. Divide halibut among tortillas and top with cabbage, salsa, pepper Jack cheese, and avocado.

Time 35m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 tablespoons honey
2 canned chipotle peppers in adobo, chopped, plus 2 tablespoons adobo sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 limes, 1 zested and juiced, 1 sliced in half
One 16-ounce bag broccoli slaw
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
5 mini sweet peppers, sliced into rings
1 to 2 serrano chiles, sliced thinly
1 pound cod fillets

Time 45m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 31

2 large ripe Hass avocados, halved, pitted and diced
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup finely diced red onion
Juice of 2 limes
1 to 2 jalapeno or serrano chiles, finely diced (depending on how spicy you like it)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon chipotle in adobo puree
5 plum tomatoes, grilled or roasted until blackened, halved, seeded and diced
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/4 cup finely diced red onion
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh Mexican oregano
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons clover honey
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup canola oil
2 cups finely shredded napa cabbage
2 cups finely shredded red cabbage
1 large carrot, peeled and julienned
Three 8-ounce fillets red snapper or mahi mahi
Canola oil, for brushing
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Four 6-inch blue corn tortillas
Four 6-inch white corn tortillas
Assorted hot sauces from the pantry: green, red, chipotle
Fresh cilantro leaves, for serving

Steps:

  • For the avocado relish: Combine the avocado, cilantro, red onion, lime juice and jalapeno in a medium bowl; season with salt and pepper. Let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.
  • For the smoked tomato salsa: Put the vinegar and chipotle puree in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine. Add the tomatoes, garlic, red onion, cilantro and oregano and pulse until slightly smooth; season with salt and pepper.
  • For the red cabbage slaw: Put the lemon juice, orange juice, basil, mustard, honey and some salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. With the motor running, add the oil until emulsified. Reserve 1/4 cup of the citrus-basil dressing for the fish.
  • Combine the napa cabbage, red cabbage and carrot in a large bowl, add half of the remaining dressing and toss to coat; season with salt and pepper. Add more dressing if needed.
  • For the fish: Heat a grill pan or cast-iron griddle over high heat.
  • Brush the fish with oil on both sides and season with salt and pepper. Grill until golden brown and slightly charred on both sides and just cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a plate and drizzle the fish with the reserved citrus-basil dressing. Let cool slightly, then flake into large pieces using a fork.
  • Grill the tortillas until slightly charred and just warmed through, about 5 seconds per side. Place the tortillas on a flat surface and fill the center of each with some of the fish, red cabbage slaw, smoked tomato salsa and avocado relish. Top with some hot sauce and cilantro leaves, then fold up and eat.
