Dal Palak / Spinach Dal in Instant Pot image

This Dal Palak recipe is a blend of split lentils and baby spinach quickly prepared in the Instant Pot then tempered with sweet ghee and warm Indian spices.

¼ cup red lentils (masoor dal)
¼ cup petite yellow lentils (mung dal)
1 tablespoon ghee (or oil)
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
½ cup chopped onion ((about ½ medium onion) (optional))
1 serrano chili (stemmed, halved and seeds removed)
2 teaspoons minced ginger ((½-inch piece of ginger))
1 tablespoon minced garlic ((about 3 cloves))
½ cup chopped tomato ((1 roma tomato))
2½ cups water ((reduce to 2 cups for thicker dal))
½-¾ teaspoon salt ((add ½, adjust after cooking))
¼ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon garam masala
¼ teaspoon red chili powder (cayenne) (reduce to ⅛ for mild, or skip)
2 cups baby spinach (chopped roughly)
1 teaspoon lime juice (fresh (or lemon))
¼-½ teaspoon garam masala ((optional))
2 teaspoons ghee
1 pinch heeng
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
¼ teaspoon cayenne ((skip for mild))

Steps:

  • Rinse lentils 2-3 times, until the water runs clear.

Instant Pot Green Lentils and Spinach Curry | Dal Palak image

Quick one-pot lentils and spinach curry or the Dal Palak made in Instant Pot with green lentils. A perfect gravy for those busy weekdays!

1/2 cup green lentils (rinsed and drained)
2 tsps coconut oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp finely chopped ginger
1 Roma tomato
4 cups One bunch spinach (approx 4 cups, when chopped)
1 1/2 tsp pink salt
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 1/2 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp ground pepper
2 cups of water

Steps:

  • Wash the green lentils and set aside. Also, wash the spinach and chop them roughly.
  • Set the Instant Pot in saute mode and when the display shows "HOT," add the coconut oil.
  • After 30 seconds, add the cumin seeds and finely chopped ginger and saute for 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and mix. Then add the chopped spinach and cook for a minute.
  • Now add the salt, turmeric powder, curry powder, and ground pepper and cook 3 minutes.
  • When the spinach wilts, add the green lentils and two cups of water. Mix thoroughly and press the cancel button.
  • Close the Instant Pot lid and make sure the vent is in the sealing position.
  • Press the manual button and set the time to 20 minutes on high pressure. After cooking, allow the pressure to release naturally. Then open the lid and mash the lentils using a potato masher.
  • Mix it and serve hot with rice or any flat-bread.
