cooking spray
4 cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
¼ cup Irish cream liqueur (such as Baileys®)
10 ounces raisins

Steps:

  • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour 1 cup buttermilk, egg, and 1/4 cup Irish cream liqueur into the well; add raisins to the buttermilk mixture. Knead mixture until raisins are spread throughout the dough. Form dough into a disk and cut an 'X' into the top of the dough; place onto prepared baking sheet and set aside.
  • Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir 1/4 cup buttermilk and 1/4 cup Irish cream liqueur into the melted butter until smooth; remove from heat and generously brush liquid over the dough.
  • Bake in preheated oven, brushing liquid onto loaf every 15 minutes, until no longer doughy in the center, about 45 minutes. Let bread cool on pan for 10 minutes before moving to a cooking rack to cool completely.

MRS. SHARP'S IRISH SODA BREAD

Mrs. Sharp's Irish Soda Bread image

This is a delicious recipe I found in the book "Mrs. Sharp's Traditions." This is a dense, subtly flavored bread that is wonderful as part of breakfast or a quick snack. It's also a snap to prepare!

Provided by Larklearningtopray

Categories     Quick Breads

Time 50m

Yield 1 round loaf, approx. 8 in. in diameter, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 cups white flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 cups sour milk

Steps:

  • Mix together flour, soda, salt, and sugar.
  • Add sour milk and stir together with a wooden spoon. The dough should be thick and sticky, but not too wet.
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and form with hands into a round loaf. Place the loaf into a cast-iron frying pan or heavy round casserole dish that has been greased with butter. Score the top in the form of a cross with a wet knife (dig in at least an inch).
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Bread should cool for an hour before serving (but I like to eat it while it's still warm!).
  • Note: If the loaf is made with whole-meal wheat flour, it is known as brown bread; if made with unbleached white flour, it's Irish soda bread. Authentic Irish soda bread is made with sour milk, not buttermilk, or milk soured by adding vinegar or lemon juice. To sour milk, simply leave it out overnight.

INDIVIDUAL IRISH SODA BREADS

Individual Irish Soda Breads image

A classic for St. Patrick's Day, this bread will have everyone raising their glasses and toasting to you. This bread makes a nice sweet treat and also make adorable gifts.

Provided by Ceezie

Categories     Breads

Time 55m

Yield 16 large buns

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 cups unbleached flour
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups dried currants or 2 cups dried cranberries
1 egg
1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine the flour and butter, working it with your fingers until it has the consistency of coarse oatmeal. Add the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and currants, still mixing with your fingers. Beat the egg and buttermilk together. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the egg-buttermilk mixture. Stir until well blended. Form into a ball.
  • Lightly dust a clean surface with flour and knead the dough for 3-4 minutes, until smooth. Divide it into 16 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place the balls at least 3 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Gently press the top of each bun with a palm of your hand to flatten it slightly. Using a very sharp knife dipped into flour cut an inch-deep cross on the top of each bun. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and crusty. Cool on a wire rack.
  • To Package: Buns and muffins look special when individually wrapped. To emphasize their simple origin, place each Irish Soda Bread in the center of a 12-in. square of brown butcher paper or tan tissue paper and twist all edges upward to resemble a flower. Present the soda breads in a low basket with a shamrock-shaped label.
