This recipe for spicy, refreshing Bloody Marys is a perfect accompaniment to Eggs Benedict or other brunch favorites.

4 cups tomato juice
Juice of 2 large lemons
1 to 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 heaping tablespoon prepared horseradish
1 1/2 cloves garlic, passed through a garlic press
2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
Unflavored vodka, to taste
Lemon wedges, for serving
Celery sticks, for serving and munching

Steps:

  • Place tomato juice in a large container with a tight-fitting lid. Add lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, garlic, pepper, and Tabasco; shake vigorously. Taste, and adjust for seasoning; the mixture should be quite spicy.
  • Pour 1 part vodka and 3 parts Bloody Mary mix over ice in a shaker. Shake well. Pour into glasses. Squeeze a wedge of lemon over drink (do not subsequently stir or shake drink), discard used wedge. Garnish with a large stick of celery (reserve extra stalks for munching) and a large lemon wedge.

Steps:

  • Cook 2 chopped shallots in a skillet with 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat, about 3 minutes. Add 3/4 cup heavy cream, 2 cups Perfect Marinara Sauce (see Cook's Note) and a pinch of red pepper flakes; heat through. Stir in 1/4 cup grated parmesan and 1 to 2 tablespoons vodka; season with salt. Toss with penne.

VODKA-THYME LEMONADE

Infusing sugar syrup with fresh thyme gives this vodka lemonade sophisticated, seasonal flair.

2 cups sugar
12 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish
4 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 24 lemons
2 cups vodka

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups water with the sugar and thyme; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool to room temperature.
  • Pour mixture through a fine sieve into a large glass measuring cup; discard thyme. You should have 2 cups syrup. Cover with plastic; chill.
  • In a large serving pitcher, stir together lemon juice, vodka, and chilled syrup; garnish with thyme. Divide evenly among eight tumblers filled with ice; serve immediately.

1 cup fresh cranberries
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 piece fresh orange peel (2-by-1-inch)
3 cups vodka

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, heat cranberries, sugar, and water until the sugar dissolves, the liquid begins to turn a light-pink color, and the cranberries just begin to pop. Pour the cranberries and the liquid into a large glass jar; stir in peel and vodka. Cover, and let stand at room temperature at least 3 days or up to one month. Strain before serving.

1/4 cup dry vermouth
Ice cubes
Cocktail olives, caper berries, or cocktail onions, for garnish

Steps:

  • Shake or stir 1/2 cup vodka or gin and 1 1/2 teaspoons vermouth in an ice-filled shaker. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with olives, caper berries, or onions. Repeat with remaining vodka or gin and vermouth.

MAKE-AHEAD BLOODY MARY MIX

3 stalks celery, cut into 2-inch pieces
6 cups tomato juice
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 to 3 lemons)
3 tablespoons lightly packed grated peeled fresh horseradish
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 to 2 teaspoons hot sauce, such as Tabasco, plus more for serving
Freshly ground pepper
Pickled okra, pickled pearl onions, caperberries, and lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
Vodka, chilled

Steps:

  • Pulse celery in a food processor until finely chopped. Add 2 cups tomato juice and puree until smooth. Transfer to a pitcher and stir in remaining 4 cups tomato juice, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire, celery salt, hot sauce, and pepper. Cover and refrigerate at least 12 hours and up to 2 days.
  • Thread garnishes on skewers. Vigorously stir Bloody Mary mix just before serving. Serve over ice as is, or with vodka, hot sauce, pepper, and garnishes.
