This is a simple, easy and nutritious recipe to use as a substitute for canned dog food.

1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
3 stalks celery, chopped
2 carrots, grated
1 apple, cored and diced
2 eggs
2 slices white bread, torn into pieces
1 cup regular rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
4 medium potatoes, cubed
3 carrots, chopped
1 stalk celery, cubed

Steps:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a large roasting pan with oil and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, 3 stalks of celery, grated carrots, apple, eggs, bread, oats, wheat germ and tomato paste using your hands. Divide the meat mixture into four equal parts and make loaf shapes. Place the loaves in the roasting pan. Surround them with the potatoes, remaining carrots and remaining celery. Cover the pan with a lid.
Bake for 80 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the meat is cooked through. The internal temperature should be 175 degrees F (80 degrees C) when taken with a meat thermometer. Allow to cool.
Portion the food into containers with one loaf and one quarter of the vegetables in each one. Refrigerate. To serve, give your dog 1/3 of a container with each portion of kibble.

1/2 cup brown rice (cooked)
3/4 cup water
1 carrot, peeled and diced
1 celery rib, diced
3/4 lb ground beef
1 lb ground turkey or 1 lb chicken
1 cup old-fashioned oatmeal
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 tablespoon ketchup

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350F.
Bring water to boil in small skillet.
Add carrot and celery. Reduce heat to medium and cook 5 minutes. Drain and let cool.
Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly to combine.
Place meatloaf on foil-lined baking sheet. Form into a fun shape (like a bone or hydrant!) Should be between 1 and 2 inches high on sheet.
Bake 1 hour. Remove from oven and let cool about 10 minutes.

I feed our dogs this mix along with available dry food, they enjoy this a lot. I also will add leftover shredded chicken just for an extra protein boost. Healthier than the dry / canned dog food available. You can also add leftover baby food jars of pure meat to flavour this. Prep time doesn't include cool down, wrapping nor freezing. We have 4 dogs from small to large, serving size depends on the size / breed of your dog.

Ingredients

2 -3 carrots, shredded
4 potatoes, shredded
any leftover vegetables, shredded (no onions ( or toss in some frozen veggies)
1 lb navy beans, cooked
3 lbs hamburger (I use 21 % fat)
4 eggs
1/4 cup wheat germ
3 teaspoons low-sodium beef bouillon cubes

Steps:

Heat oven to 350°F.
Lightly oil a 13x9-inch baking dish.
In a very large mixing bowl: shred carrots, potatoes and any leftover veggies, no need to peel.
Using rubber gloves hand mix/mash remaining ingredients into veggie mixture, mixing till no lumps.
Place mixture into baking dish, spreading evenly.
Bake for approx 1 1/2 hours.
Cool on wire rack.
Slice pieces into a size your dog will eat, foil wrap and date, toss into freezer bags, label for dogs Freeze remaining slices.
Defrost, then feed.
