I take these hearty appetizers to every party we attend and always bring home an empty tray. I also keep a supply in the freezer for a speedy snack that gets rave reviews. -even from children. -Vicki Wolf, Aurora, Ohio

1 can (2.8 ounces) french-fried onions, crushed
1 jar (2 ounces) crumbled bacon or 3/4 cup crumbled cooked bacon
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1 jar (14 ounces) pizza sauce
1 loaf (16 ounces) snack rye bread

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the onions, bacon, mayonnaise and Swiss cheese. Spread about 1 teaspoon of pizza sauce on each slice of bread. Top with about 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture. , Cover and freeze in a single layer for up to 2 months, or bake on an ungreased baking sheet at 350° for 12-14 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted. , To use frozen appetizers: Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 14-16 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.

3/4 cup chopped sweet onion such as Vidalia or Walla Walla
1/2 cup mayonnaise
14 slices party (cocktail) rye or pumpernickel bread
1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler.
  • Stir together onion and mayonnaise. Arrange bread slices in 1 layer on a baking sheet and broil 6 inches from heat until lightly toasted (watch carefully). Remove from oven and turn toasts over. Spread evenly with onion mixture and sprinkle with cheese and freshly ground pepper.
  • Broil hors d'oeuvres until topping is bubbling and lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes (watch carefully to prevent burning).
  • Serve warm.

3 large yellow onions
1/4 cup butter
1 (6 ounce) package cream cheese
1 (6 ounce) package swiss cheese, grated
1 package burrito-size flour tortilla

Steps:

  • Chop onions.
  • Place in frying pan with butter.
  • Fry for 20 minutes or until onions are limp.
  • Stir in cream cheese and grated swiss cheese.
  • Stir until melts.
  • Spread on tortillas.
  • Roll and refrigerate overnight.
