I love to add this or that to recipes to create my own taste twists. Wild rice is a popular ingredient here in Minnesota. But the only way my kids will touch it is in these burgers.-Amy Barthelemy, Eagan, Minnesota

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup cooked wild rice
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup chopped mushrooms
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
1 pound ground beef
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the rice, onion, mushrooms, green pepper, salt and pepper. Crumble beef over mixture; mix well. Shape into six patties. Grill or broil until no longer pink. Serve on buns.

Polenta and Wild Rice Burgers image

Crispy and flavorful, these are a wonderful alternative to standard veggie burgers - but can also be enjoyed by meat eaters!

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 tablespoons butter, divided
½ cup instant long grain and wild rice
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon chopped fresh sage
1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
5 cups water, divided
2 cups dry polenta
¾ cup sharp Cheddar cheese
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large pot set over medium heat. Add the wild rice, garlic, sage and rosemary; cook and stir until the rice is coated and the mixture is fragrant. Pour in 2 cups of the water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • After the 10 minutes, increase the heat to medium and stir in the polenta. Gradually stir in the remaining water as the polenta absorbs it. When all of the water is absorbed, mix in the remaining butter and Cheddar cheese. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently for about 20 minutes.
  • Butter a large baking dish and pour the mixture into it. Spread into an even layer if necessary and set aside to cool and become firm.
  • When the mixture cools, tap it out onto a cutting board and cut into circles using a large glass or cookie cutter. Grill or fry patties until golden on the outside. Serve with your favorite toppings.
