- In a pitcher, combine the first 5 ingredients; stir until sugar is dissolved. Moisten rims of 4 margarita or cocktail glasses with lime wedges. Sprinkle salt on a plate; dip rims in salt. Serve over crushed ice in prepared glasses.

- Wet the rim of a glass with lime wedge and dip in salt to coat. Fill glass with ice. Add tequila, lime juice, liqueur, and syrup and stir.
- Place 3 to 4 candied lime rounds on a small wooden skewer. Garnish cocktail with skewer and lime halves.

Steps:
- Trim off the very ends of the lime, then cut the lime lengthwise into quarters.
- Rub one of the lime quarters around the rims of two glasses, then dip the rims in salt to coat.
- Add the lime quarters, tequila, water, sugar, and orange liqueur, to a blender. Blend on high speed until the lime is broken down and only small specks of green remain, 1-2 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a spouted measuring cup to remove any solids, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible.
- Fill the glasses with ice, then evenly divide the margarita mixture between the two. Garnish each glass with a lime wheel and serve immediately.

- Combine first 4 ingredients in a 4-cup measuring cup.
- FOR BLENDED MARGARITAS: Fill blender halfway with ice cubes.
- Add half of margarita mixture.
- Blend until mixture is thick and icy.
- Divide between two glasses.
- Repeat with more ice cubes and remaining margarita mixture.
- FOR MARGARITAS ON THE ROCKS: Fill four glasses with ice cubes.
- Divide margarita mixture among glasses and serve.
- DO-AHEAD TIP: Margarita mixture can be made up to 8 hours ahead and prior to being blended with ice.
- Cover and refrigerate.

- Bring sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add lime slices and simmer until translucent, about 6 minutes.
- Remove from heat; transfer slices to a wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet and reserve syrup. Let lime slices dry and syrup cool before using, at least 20 minutes.

This margarita, made with freshly squeezed orange juice, lime juice, and agave for a natural sweetener, is light, refreshing, and not too sweet. Salt or sugar rim optional.
