ROASTED PAAN (SRI-LANKAN BREAD) RECIPE BY TASTY



Roasted Paan (Sri-Lankan Bread) Recipe by Tasty image

Here's what you need: flour, yeast, butter, salt, sugar, lukewarm water, lukewarm water, flour, butter, olive oil

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 lb flour
1 tablespoon yeast
¼ cup butter
1 tablespoon salt
¼ cup sugar
4 tablespoons lukewarm water, to mix the yeast
2 cups lukewarm water, for the dough
¼ cup flour
½ cup butter
1 tablespoon olive oil

Steps:

  • Mix yeast and sugar with 4 tbsp water and let it bloom for 10-15 minutes.
  • Mix together flour, butter, salt, water, and the yeast mixture into a dough. Knead well.
  • Rest the dough for 1 hour in a slightly warm, dry place. Cover with a wet towel.
  • Once the dough has doubled in size, knead again. Then, separate the dough into 200g balls and let them rest for 15 minutes in a flat oven pan.
  • Knead the 200g balls into squares with a slight dome on the top. Now, apply the 'oil trick mixture' on the top of the dough balls.
  • Place all the shaped dough balls in a 7" baking tray.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Once preheated, bake bread for 20-25 minutes.
  • After 25 minutes, take the bread tray out of the oven and separate the bread pieces while hot. Lay them on a flat oven tray.
  • Place the tray back in the oven until the tops turn golden brown, roughly 15 minutes.
  • Serce with a curry or coconut sambal paste.
  • Enjoy!

  • Mix water and milk together. Make sure they both are in lukewarm temp. Dump the sugar. Do not mix. Sprinkle the yeast over the surface. It should start to foam up immediately on the edges. (If not your yeast is not good and might have expired. Throw away and start fresh with new yeast.)
  • Knead the dough (about 8 - 10mins in the machine or 15-20 mins with hands) until it becomes soft, pliable, and lump-free. Read the recipe description for hand kneading instructions.
  • Make the dough into a rough ball with your hands. Apply some oil to the bowl. Put the dough in, seam side down. And apply a few drops of oil on top of the dough as well. Cover with plastic wrap.
