Grandma's War Time Orange Drop Cookies are an old family favorite dating back to the second world war when rationing was in force. Grandma always came up with a great cookie for everyone to enjoy!

2 Tbs Orange Rind, grated
1/2 tsp Orange Flavoring
Juice of half an Orange
2/3 cup or 170 g Butter, softened
1 1/4 cups or 425 g Honey
1 Egg, beaten
2 1/2 cups or 310 g All Purpose Flour, sifted
3 Teaspoons Baking Powder
1/4 Teaspoon Salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F or 180 C.
  • Mix together the butter and honey.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt, then add to the honey mixture and fold in beaten egg, grated orange rind and orange juice.
  • Place in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  • Drop the batter in teaspoonfuls and bake for about 8 - 10 minutes.
  • When done, leave in baking tray for 5 minutes then place on a cooling rack until cool. Enjoy with a nice cold glass of milk or a cup of coffee!

1 cup margarine
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup sour cream
2 eggs
3 tablespoons grated orange zest
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup orange juice
¼ cup margarine, melted
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the margarine, sugar and sour cream until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 3 tablespoons orange zest. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternately with 2/3 cup orange juice. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. In a small bowl, stir together the melted margarine, confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Mix remaining orange juice in 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Spread over cooled cookies.

⅔ cup shortening
¾ cup white sugar
1 egg
½ cup orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir 1/2 cup orange juice and 1 teaspoon rind into the flour mixture.
  • Cream shortening and white sugar together. Mix egg into the sugar mixture thoroughly. Slowly blend flour mixture into the egg and sugar mixture. Drop by teaspoonful onto greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Make the icing: Mix confectioner's sugar and 2 tablespoons butter together until smooth. Pour 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1 teaspoon orange rind into the sugar and butter mixture, mix well. When the cookies have cooled spread the icing generously over the tops of the cookies.

1 large egg
3 tablespoons milk ((45 grams))
1 cup all purpose flour ((130 grams))
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
1 tablespoon sugar ((12 1/2 grams))
zest of 1/2 an orange
2 tablespoons butter (cold) ((26 grams))

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 400F (200C) and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a small bowl beat together the egg and milk, set aside.
  • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and zest. Add the cold butter and mix to form coarse crumbs. Add the egg mixture and mix with a fork or spatula just until combined (about 15 or 16 stirs).
  • Drop the batter by heaping tablespoons (6 mounds) on the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 15-18 minutes or until lightly golden (a little darker on the edges). Move to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!

1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup raisins or 1/2 cup chocolate chips, if using

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400F/200°C.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  • In another large mixing bowl, mix butter, sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in orange juice and rind.
  • Sift dry ingredients into wet ingredients and blend together.
  • Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet.

3 large egg yolks, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon juice

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup apricot preserves

Steps:

  • In a bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks one at a time; add vanilla, lemon juice and zest. In another bowl, whisk flour and baking soda; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Reserve 1/2 cup of dough; wrap and freeze. Shape remaining portion into a rectangle; wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes., Preheat oven to 350°. Roll larger portion of dough on a lightly floured piece of parchment into a 12x8-in. rectangle, about 1/4-in. thick; transfer to a baking sheet. Spread preserves over dough to within 1/4-in. of edge. Grate remaining frozen dough over preserves. Bake until light golden brown, 24-28 minutes. Cool on pan 5 minutes. Remove to a wire rack to cool. Cut into bars.

1 package white cake mix (regular size)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
1 teaspoon orange extract
1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, orange zest and extract. Fold in coconut. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets. , Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool. In a small bowl, combine icing ingredients until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cookies.
