Don't Fear the Red! Beets are a unique source of phytonutrients called betalains. Betanin and vulgaxanthin are the two best-studied betalains from beets, and both have been shown to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support. The detox support provided by betalains includes support of some especially important Phase 2 detox steps involving glutathione. Although you can see these betalain pigments in other foods (like the stems of chard or rhubarb), the concentration of betalains in the peel and flesh of beets gives you an unexpectedly great opportunity for these health benefits. Americans get way too little fruit and veggies. Smoothies are a great way to pack your diet with healing nutrients and healthful fiber.

6 ounces beets (fresh, 1 medium beet)
4 ounces carrots (fresh, 1 medium carrot)
6 ounces apples (fresh, 1 medium apple)
1 banana (fresh or frozen)
1 lime (juiced)
1 tablespoon ginger (fresh, grated)
2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
32 ounces water (or to fill blender to 64 ounces)

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients into your blender container and process until smooth.
  • Notes: Server immediately, or refrigerate for up to 24 hours. You can substitute ice for some of the water.

A surprise in every sip. I have not tried this recipe. I'm posting this for safe keeping. I found this recipe in The Fear Factor Cookbook.

1 medium ripe banana
6 ounces vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup milk
2 ice cubes
red food coloring
green food coloring
yellow food coloring
blue food coloring
1 ounce blue prepared gelatin (1 container, green or yellow can be used instead) or 1 ounce leftover fruit flavored gelatin (1 container, green or yellow can be used instead)
canned whipped topping
black decorating gel or red decorating gel

Steps:

  • To make the smoothie, combine the banana, yogurt, milk, and ice cubes in a blender container. Blend at high speed until the mixture is frothy.
  • Add a drop of red, green, yellow, and blue food coloring and blend again for 30 seconds to make a loathsome-looking, mud colored drink. Pour into a tall glass.
  • For the sea slug topping, cut the gelatin with a dinner knife into 6 small slivers and float on the smoothie.
  • Using a can of whipped cream, spray a thin line of cream around the rim of the glass. Cover the whipped topping with black or red decorating gel to make a slimy sea worm crawling up the glass.
  • Serve this drink with a long handled spoon. For safety's sake, do not drink until you've scooped out the gelatin slivers.

0.1 oz ginger (1/3 inch ginger root)
0.05 oz turmeric (3/16 inch turmeric root)
1 oz date (pitted & soaked 1 hr) (4 dates)
1.75 oz banana (frozen) (1/3 banana)
3 oz ice (1/3 cup)
0.03 oz clove (ground) (1 small pinch clove)
0.15 oz cinnamon (ground) (1 large pinch cinnamon)
0.5 oz sea moss gel (1 tablespoon)
9 oz water
0.6 oz dry Irish sea moss

Steps:

  • Weigh out 0.6 oz / 17 g of dried sea moss.
  • Wash the moss well, cover in water and refrigerate for 12-24 hours.
  • Drain and rinse, add moss and 1 cup of water to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Peel the turmeric root and ginger root.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth, about 1 minute.
