This is the recipe my mother used for sloppy joes and it always gets compliments!

1 pound lean ground beef
¼ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
¾ cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids.
  • Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
⅓ cup chopped green pepper
1 pound lean ground beef
1 ½ cups Heinz Tomato Ketchup
1 tablespoon Heinz Worcestershire Sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
8 sandwich buns

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large frying pan set over medium-high heat. Saute onions and green pepper for 5 minutes.
  • Add beef to the pan. Cook, stirring until browned, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off fat.
  • Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Serve on sandwich buns.

1 lb extra lean ground beef
1 onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 jalapeno, minced
1 red pepper, diced
1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce, no salt added
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon mustard powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
fresh ground pepper (to taste)
8 whole wheat hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Brown the meat and onion in a large non-stick skillet over med-high heat for 5 minutes, breaking up the meat into crumbles as it cooks.
  • Pour the drippings out of the pan.
  • Add the garlic, jalapeno and red pepper and cook 5 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in the rest of the ingredients and reduce the heat to low.
  • Simmer for 5 minutes more.
  • Serve 1/2 cup scoop of the mixture onto each bun and serve.

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes*. Test the lentils to make sure they are tender and then drain in a colander. Set the cooked lentils aside until you are ready to add them to the sloppy joes. The lentils can be simmering while you make the rest of the sloppy joes.
  • Mince the garlic and finely dice the onion. Add both to a large skillet along with the olive oil and sauté over medium heat until they begin to soften (3-5 minutes).
  • While the onion and garlic are cooking, finely dice the bell pepper. Add the diced bell pepper to the skillet and sauté a few minutes more.
