They'll be standing in line for this saucy bean recipe, full of campfire flavor. A variation on colorful calico beans, it makes a great side dish with all your cookout favorites. -Lynne German, Cumming, Georgia

1 pound bulk spicy pork sausage
1 medium onion, chopped
2 15-oz. cans pork and beans
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (16 ounces) butter beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) navy beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained
1/2 cup hickory smoke-flavored barbecue sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground mustard
1 teaspoon steak seasoning
1 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. , In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the beans, tomatoes and sausage mixture. In a small bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, steak seasoning and Liquid Smoke if desired. Stir into bean mixture. , Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until heated through.

2 cups white beans, soaked for 2 hours
3 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
2 teaspoons vegetarian chicken soup base
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 bay leaf
1 carrot, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
1 onion, chopped
One 14-ounce can diced tomatoes

Steps:

  • Grease the slow cooker with nonstick spray. Place the beans, ketchup, brown sugar, smoke paprika, soup base, red pepper flakes, garlic, bay leaf, carrots, celery, onions and tomatoes into the slow cooker along with 1/2 cup water. Stir and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours. Add 3 tablespoons water halfway through cooking, if needed.

I smoked this on my smoker but you can just add a touch of liquid smoke and bake in your oven or cook stove top. I used this Recipe #207079 as the sauce ingredient called for.

3/4 cup light molasses
3/4 cup water
1 chipotle chile in adobo

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients to a dutch oven and heat for 15 minutes.
  • place in a smoker for 1-2 hours uncovered using your favorite wood chips stirring a couple times.

6 bacon slices
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
1 1/4 cups purchased barbecue sauce
3/4 cup dark beer
1/4 cup mild-flavored (light) molasses
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
3 tablespoons (packed) dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
4 to 6 teaspoons minced canned chipotle chilies
6 15- to 16-ounce cans Great Northern beans, drained
Chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook bacon in large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Transfer to paper towels and drain. Transfer 2 1/2 tablespoons bacon drippings from skillet to large bowl. Finely chop bacon; add to bowl. Add onion and next 7 ingredients to bowl and whisk to blend. Whisk in 4 to 6 teaspoons chipotle chilies, depending on spiciness desired. Stir in beans. Transfer bean mixture to 13 x 9 x 2-inch glass baking dish. Bake uncovered until liquid bubbles and thickens slightly, about 1 hour. Cool 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with parsley and serve.

4 strips thick sliced bacon, cut into 1/4-inch slivers
2 medium onions, finely chopped (about 2 cups)
1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped
2 gloves garlic, minced
2 (15-ounce) cans great northern or kidney beans, drained and rinsed in a colander
1/3 cup molasses
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar, or to taste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1/4 tablespoon liquid smoke, or to taste
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • In a heavy pot, cook the bacon over medium heat to render the fat, about 5 minutes. Discard all but 2 tablespoons fat.
  • Add the onion, pepper, and garlic and cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in the beans, molasses, barbecue sauce, ketchup, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustards, vinegar, and liquid smoke. Simmer the beans, uncovered, until rich and thickly flavored, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon. Alternatively, place the baked beans in a deep baking dish and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes. Add salt, pepper, or any other ingredient to taste.

2 cups good quality barbecue sauce (Smokin' Joe Jones' sauces...there are many...are the best.)
1/2 cup fresh sweet onion, chopped
4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled (optional)

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Gently mix all ingredients in an oven-safe bean pot.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Serve with any bbq or grilled meat, along with chilled coleslaw and some french fries.
  • Have extra warmed BBQ sauce on hand at the table, along with lots of napkins or wet-wipes.
