SMOTHERED TURKEY LEGS

Smothered Turkey Legs image

Smothered Turkey Legs - This dish is a treat and what I love about it besides the creamy gravy, is the flavor of fried turkey and the simplicity of the recipe. A quick dinner that will work its way to your heart!

Categories     Main Course

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 14

6 slices of turkey legs
1 large onion finely chopped
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Salt to taste (I used ½ teaspoon salt)
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon paprika
All-purpose flour to dredge the turkey legs.
3 tablespoon oil to fry the turkey
1 tablespoon oil for the gravy
2 tablespoon butter for the gravy
2 cup water
½ cup milk (you can use less or omit if you want the gravy darker in color)

Steps:

  • Season the turkey with all the spices then dredge in flour. Keep aside.
  • In a large pan, add 3 tablespoon oil and when hot add the turkey. Fry both sides until golden in color. The idea is not to cook the turkey here but to just give it a crisp outer layer. Remove the turkey from the pan and keep aside.
  • In the same pan add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  • Add both the fried turkey and onion in a baking pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes in a preheated oven of 375F/190C.
  • In the previous pan, add 2 tablespoon butter and one tablespoon oil, when hot add 5 tablespoon flour and stir until the flour is light brown.
  • Add two cups of water while stirring, then add ½ cup milk. Add the cooked turkey with the onion to this sauce, cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
  • Serve with cornbread or mashed potato.

SMOTHERED TURKEY WINGS

Smothered Turkey Wings image

I haven't tried this one yet, I'm putting it here for safe-keeping. Looks good, and interesting, and would be good to do when turkey parts go on sale. This recipe is from B.J.'s Market & Bakery in Chicago.

EASY CROCK POT TURKEY LEGS

Easy Crock Pot Turkey Legs image

Turkey legs taste great prepared with the oil alone or with the oil and seasonings both. A flavorful option is to use the oil with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme as seasonings. You may make gravy with the drippings or use it as turkey broth in soup and other recipes. The broth is especially good in Progresso BestLife lentil soup to which you also add some leftover turkey and some turkey ham cubes. An oval slow cooker is easiest fit for turkey legs. Put an oval rack under legs and watch cooking time if you want firmer legs, often separate from broth.

HOW TO COOK SMOKED TURKEY LEGS - ALLRECIPES

From allrecipes.com
Estimated Reading Time 3 mins
  • Choose Your Legs. It can sometimes be tricky to find turkey legs when it's not the holidays. And, when you do, they are often part of the whole bird. Ask the butcher at your local market for help, and see if they can order the legs from the large male turkeys instead of the smaller females (if you want fair-style jumbo legs).
  • Brining Is Best. Brined Turkey. Though it's not absolutely necessary, taking the time to brine your bird legs before you smoke them will add flavor and moisture.
  • Rinse and Dry. To make sure your turkey legs aren't too salty, give them a quick rinse after brining. This also helps to remove any excess seasoning that may burn while smoking.
  • Rub With Spices. Johnny's Spice Rub. Lightly rub the turkey legs with high-heat oil like vegetable, canola, corn, grapeseed, safflower, or sunflower (don't use olive oil, as it can burn easily), then apply your favorite combination of spices, seasoning rub, or just go au-natural.
  • Smoke the Turkey. Smoking Turkey Legs. Here is where all of that preparation is put to good use: The smoking! Here's how long to cook smoked turkey legs, depending on how you're smoking them
