IRISH SODA FARLS RECIPE



Irish Soda Farls Recipe image

Traditional Irish Soda Farls - This traditional Irish Bread is great slathered with Creamy Irish Butter but is also a key part of the traditional Ulster Fry. Try it and you will fall in love with it too.

300 g Plain White Flour
1 and 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
250 ml Buttermilk
Pinch of Salt

Steps:

  • Once ingredient are weighed out preheat a heavy bottomed pan on a medium to medium high heat.
  • Mix the flour, salt and baking soda together and make a well in the middle.
  • Working quickly mix in the buttermilk into the flour with your hand to make a soft dough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a light floured surface and shape the dough into a round flattening it so its about 1 1/2 cm high.
  • Place it into your preheated pan and score the top with a knife in a cross shape making 4 equal quarters. There is no need to add oil to the pan but you can sprinkle a little flour to prevent sticking if you wish.
  • Turn over after approx 10 minutes and cook on the other side for another 10 minutes until the bread is nicely risen and is cooked through.
  • Once cooked remove from pan and break into 4 quarters and serve with your traditional ulster fry or on their own with Irish butter. Enjoy.

250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
½ tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 heaped tsp bicarbonate of soda
225ml buttermilk

Steps:

  • Tip the flour into a large bowl and stir through the salt, sugar and bicarb. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk, then swiftly stir to combine. Tip onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll into a roughly 20cm circle and cut into quarters.
  • Heat a skillet or heavy-based frying pan over a low-medium heat. Add the farls and cook for 8-10 mins on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the heat and leave the farls to cool in the pan for 10 mins. Split open and eat warm with butter.

Traditionally this was the quickest way to make soda bread for unexpected guests who drop by for a bit of craic (good fun). It's best eaten fresh with butter and jam but is also delicious fried as part of an Ulster breakfast.

½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat heavy based flat griddle or skillet on medium to low heat.
  • Place flour and salt in a bowl and sift in baking soda. Make a well in the center, and pour in the buttermilk.
  • Work quickly to mix into dough and knead very lightly on a well floured surface. Form into a flattened circle, about 1/2 inch thick and cut into quarters with a floured knife.
  • Sprinkle a little flour over the base of the hot pan and cook the farls for 6 to 8 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

1 pinch salt
1 cup buttermilk, or as needed

Steps:

  • Sift flour and salt together into a bowl and make a well in the middle. Pour in enough buttermilk to make a soft, but not sticky dough; mix well. Transfer dough to a well floured work surface and knead. Shape dough into a round about 1/2-inch thick. Cut dough into 4 or 8 farls (flatbread) using a bread knife.
  • Lightly flour a griddle over medium heat; place farls on the griddle. Cook until lightly browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side.
