From a request here is a post on a traditional Halloween recipe. From Texarkana Pagan and Witches group on MSN originally. Soul cakes were the original trick-or-treat goody. Irish peasants would go door-to door on All Hallows Eve begging homeowners for food to celebrate the occasion. Soul cakes were given to them. This ensured the homeowner would be free from a curse or prank; instead, the receivers would offer prayers for them that would help them get into heaven.

1 cup butter, two sticks American
3 3/4 cups sifted flour
1 cup fine sugar
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon allspice
2 eggs
2 teaspoons cider vinegar
4 -6 tablespoons milk
powdered sugar, to sprinkle on top

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Cut the butter into the flour with a pastry blender or a large fork.
  • Blend in the sugar, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and allspice; beat eggs, vinegar, and milk together.
  • Mix with the flour mixture until a stiff dough is formed.
  • Knead thoroughly and roll out 1/4-inch thick.
  • Cut into 3-inch rounds and place on greased baking sheets. Prick several times with a fork and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  • Presentation:.
  • Sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar while still warm.

My favorite bacon-wrapped turkey recipe calls for 'soul food seasoning,' and I couldn't find it in any of the stores near me. After much searching, this is what worked the best. This makes enough for multiple uses.

2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons dark chile powder
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon ground celery seed
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 pinch cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • Mix pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chile powder, paprika, salt, thyme, celery seed, parsley, and cayenne together in a container with a tight lid.

Yield Makes 8 to 10 servings

For Brownie
4 1/2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup unsalted butter
3 large eggs
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon of spiced rum
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all purpose flour
pinch of salt
For vanilla caramel sauce
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup of heavy cream
1/2 tablespoon vanilla
pinch of salt
For sprinkling on top
flaked coconut
toasted peanuts
melted chocolate

Steps:

  • Make brownies:
  • Pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  • Melt chocolate and butter in double boiler. Set aside to cool.
  • Beat eggs until light. Add sugars and beat until thick and smooth. Stir in rum. Stir in flour and salt just until mixed, add melted chocolate and stir. Spread into a 9-inch springform pan lined with parchment paper, bake about 30-35 minutes until a tester comes out clean. Cool.
  • Make vanilla caramel:
  • Combine all of the ingredients (except vanilla) in a sauce pan. Over a low heat, stir constantly until mixture reaches 250°F. or the soft ball stage. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.
  • Pour over baked brownies. Let set 2-3 minutes and sprinkle with sweetened flaked coconut and toasted peanuts. Cool completely. Stripe with melted semi-sweet chocolate.
