This dish was always a favorite at Mammaw's house. Cabbage is fried with onion and bacon in this simple quick side dish. Terrific with cornbread.

3 slices bacon, cut into thirds
⅓ cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
1 head cabbage, cored and sliced
1 white onion, chopped
1 pinch white sugar

Steps:

  • Place the bacon and vegetable oil into a large pot over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until bacon is crisp. Add cabbage, onion, and sugar to the pot; cook and stir continuously for 5 minutes, until tender.

Best Southern fried cabbage recipe ever. This cheap vegetable dish is packed with flavor. Serve as a side dish or add meat for dinner.

1 head cabbage (cubed)
how to cut cabbage
1/2 package bacon (diced)
1/2 onion (diced)
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 c vegetable broth (or chicken broth)
2 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp Old Bay

Steps:

  • In a dutch oven or pot over medium heat, add olive oil, diced bacon and onions. Cook until bacon is a bit crispy and onions are softened.
  • Cut end off cabbage and discard, slice in half and then into 1x1" cubes. Add into pot and mix together. Saute together for 2 minutes.
  • Pour in vegetable broth and all seasonings, stir together. Saute for another 2 minutes.
  • Cover and turn heat to low, cook for 5 minutes. Open, stir and if you want it softer cover again for another minute or two.

7 slices bacon
1 head cabbage, cored and coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon white sugar
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • In the same skillet, stir cabbage in the bacon drippings until coated. Place lid on skillet and cook over medium heat until cabbage is tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in sugar and season with salt and pepper. Cook uncovered, stirring constantly until cabbage is crisp and brown on the edges. Serve cabbage with bacon crumbled on top.

3 tablespoons butter or 3 tablespoons bacon fat
1 small green cabbage, chopped
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/2-3/4 lb smoked sausage, sliced (I like Conecuh, Original)
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained (I like Hunt's Petite Diced)
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt, to taste
1/4 teaspoon Tony Chachere's Seasoning, to taste (optional)
salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Chop/slice the sausage, cabbage, and onion.
  • In a large non-stick skillet, pre-cook the sliced sausage about 3 minutes to render some of the fat out. Remove sausage from skillet and drain on paper towels if needed. Set aside. Wipe the skillet clean.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add cabbage and onion and cook and stir on medium-high for about 5 minutes, until cabbage starts to wilt.
  • Add remaining ingredients, and the sausage.
  • Cover the skillet and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Uncover, and finish cooking until cabbage is desired tenderness and most of liquid has been reduced.
