This is a wonderful, hearty split pea soup. Great for a fall or blustery winter day.

2 ¼ cups dried split peas
2 quarts cold water
1 ½ pounds ham bone
2 onions, thinly sliced
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pinch dried marjoram
3 stalks celery, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
1 potato, diced

Steps:

  • In a large stock pot, cover peas with 2 quarts cold water and soak overnight. If you need a faster method, simmer the peas gently for 2 minutes, and then soak for l hour.
  • Once peas are soaked, add ham bone, onion, salt, pepper and marjoram. Cover, bring to boil and then simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove bone; cut off meat, dice and return meat to soup. Add celery, carrots and potatoes. Cook slowly, uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.

Creamy Split Pea Hamburger Soup done in the Instant Pot or your slow cooker! This hearty soup is chock full of protein and iron and is delicious!

1 pound lean ground beef
1 white onion (diced)
1 garlic clove (minced)
8 cups of chicken broth
4 medium russet potatoes (peeled and diced)
2 carrots (peeled and diced)
1 cup of dry green split peas
1/2 teaspoon rosemary
1/2 teaspoon thyme
2 bay leaves

Steps:

  • In a medium frying pan, fry up the ground beef and onions until translucent. Once done, drain the grease then return to the heat. Add the garlic and saute for another 2 minutes. Once done, place in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  • Mix in the remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6.
  • Stir the soup to disperse the peas evenly throughout the soup and serve.
  • Press the saute button on your Instant Pot and place the ground beef and onions inside. Proceed to fry up the ground beef and onions until translucent. Once done, drain the grease then return to the Instant Pot. Add the garlic and saute for another 2 minutes.
  • Mix in the remaining ingredients. You can now either pressure cook or slow cook. Use the slow cook function and cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  • To pressure cook, press the soup button and choose 45 minutes. Turn the top knob to "sealing" and let it pressure cook.
  • When done, you can chose to manually release the pressure by placing a tea towel over the sealing knob and release by turning it. You can also let it naturally release pressure and wait until it's done to take off the lid. The extra cooking time will not matter or affect the end result.
  • Stir the soup to mix the peas throughout and serve.

1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 cups water
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) chicken broth
1-1/2 cups dried green split peas
1 cup cubed fully cooked ham
3 bay leaves
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, saute onion in oil until tender. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1 hour or until peas are tender. Discard bay leaves.

6 cups water, cold
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup barley, fine
1/4 cup split peas
8 peppercorns
2 medium onions, chopped
1/2 cup carrot, chopped
1/2 cup celery, chopped
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped

Steps:

  • Combine cold water, top round cut in small pieces and salt in a 4-quart soup pot.
  • Bring to a boil slowly, skim thorougly and add barley, split peas and peppercorns.
  • Cover and simmer gently for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Add chopped onions, carrots and celery and simmer 1/2 hour longer, stirring frequently.
  • To serve, sprinkle with chopped parsley.

2 cups palouse brand split peas
2 quarts vegetable broth
2 tablespoons olive oil or 2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 cups diced carrots
4 stalks celery, chopped

Steps:

  • In a dutch oven or pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat, add the onion, and sauté for 5 minutes. Add carrots, celery, and garlic, and sauté, stirring frequently, for 6-8 minutes. Add the split peas, and vegetable broth.
  • Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Let soup cool slightly.
  • Using an immersion blender, carefully, as to not burn yourself, puree soup until desired consistency. You can also puree using a food/processor or blender, which may take two batches. Taste for seasoning, adding salt and pepper as needed. Soup will thicken upon standing.
