Witches' fingers recipe image

Witches' fingers are made with sweet dough decorated with almonds and jam, but they look convincing (and creepy!). Perfect for a Halloween party

Provided by Jessica Dady

Time 20m

Yield Makes: 45

Number Of Ingredients 8

100g butter
100g caster sugar
1 medium egg
1tsp vanilla extract
225g plain flour
½tsp baking powder
45 blanched almonds, halved
5tbsp strawberry jam

Steps:

  • Using a food processor, beat the butter and sugar until pale. Add the egg and vanilla, and whisk again. Sift in the flour and baking powder, and mix to form a soft dough. Chill for 30 mins.
  • Heat oven to 180C, gas 4. Divide the dough into 45 and roll each piece into a finger shape. Press the back of a knife into the dough to make knuckles. Lightly press an almond where the nail would be. Put on lined baking trays and chill for 30 mins. Bake for 10-12 mins until pale golden.
  • Once cooled, spoon a little jam onto the nail base and top with an almond.

WITCH FINGER COOKIES

Witch Finger Cookies image

Go all out this Halloween with this spooky Witch Finger Cookies from Food Network.

Provided by Giada De Laurentiis

Categories     dessert

Time 2h

Yield 28 finger cookies

Number Of Ingredients 10

Vegetable oil cooking spray
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
28 large sliced almonds
1/2 cup raspberry jam

Steps:

  • Place an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray a rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray or line with a silicone baking mat. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until smooth. Gradually beat in the flour mixture until a dough forms.
  • Using about1 1/2 tablespoons of dough at a time, roll the dough between your palms into 5-inch-long fingers about 1/2-inch thick. Firmly press a sliced almond into the end of each finger to make fingernails. Make several horizontal cuts, about 1/4 inch deep and 1/2 inch long, in the center of each finger to make knuckles. Press the dough on either side of the cuts to shape the knuckles. Arrange the fingers on the prepared baking sheet and bake until light golden, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer the fingers to a wire rack and cool completely.
  • In a small saucepan, heat the jam over low heat until warm, about 2 minutes. Dip the blunt ends of the fingers in the warm jam and arrange on a platter.

BONNIE'S SPOOKY WITCHES FINGERS

BONNIE'S SPOOKY WITCHES FINGERS image

You will enjoy making these Spooky Witches Fingers. How clever is this? These grown-up tasting cookies with a kid appearance are sure to be a smash hit at your next Halloween party! Almonds act as fingernails and red decorating gel as blood for these spooky finger-shaped cookies that kids and grown-ups alike will Enjoy! My Dad loved helping me make these today. He is 92 and has never seen this type of cookie before. He really got into it and wanted me to make a hand with a thumb. So I tried my best. This is fun and easy to do! Enjoy!

Categories     Cookies

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 - cup butter, softened
1 - cup confectioners' sugar
1 - egg
1 - teaspoon almond extract
1 - teaspoon vanilla extract
2 2/3 - cups all-purpose flour
1 - teaspoon baking powder
1 - teaspoon salt
3/4 - cup whole almonds
1 - .75 ounce tube red decorating gel

Steps:

  • Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes. (Don't skip this step.)
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets. (I use parchment paper, no need to grease)
  • Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie. I liked mine natural color.
  • Cook's Tip: You can add green food coloring to the dough and when you take them out of the oven , you can add a single chocolate chip for a wart. You can add red gel food coloring or raspberry jam for the severed end of the finger. Possibilities are endless! The cookies do enlarge when baked (almost double the thickness) so make sure you don't make them too round when you are rolling them out. My Dad wanted me to make a hand with a thumb, so I gave it my best shot! LOL! This was so much fun! Enjoy!

SPOOKY WITCH FINGER COOKIES

Spooky Witch Finger Cookies image

Yield 36

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup butter (softened)
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups flour
6 drops green food coloring (more or less if needed)
36 whole almonds (blanched)
1 (.67 ounce) tube red gel
1 cup strawberry jam - optional

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl mix together the butter, powdered sugar, egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  • Stir in salt, baking powder, and flour and mix until combined well.
  • Add in green food coloring until you get the color you desire.
  • Leave dough in the mixing bowl and cover bowl with plastic wrap and chill for about 20 minutes.
  • Remove from fridge and roll dough into 1 1/4 inch balls.
  • Then roll each ball into a finger shape about 4-5 inches long. Press an almond into the end of each finger. Using a toothpick make indentations to resemble creases in the fingers where knuckles would be.
  • Place fingers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until set. You don't want to overcook these cookies or they will dry out and break easily.
  • Cool completely before adding the gel. When cooled, remove the almond and place a little red gel at the base of the nail bed and then replace the almond. Press so that the gel shows around the nail.
  • You can also add gel or jam to the end of the finger or you can leave them the way they are.
  • These witch fingers are so delicious dipped in jam.

SPOOKY WITCHES

Spooky Witches image

Provided by Bakerella

Categories     Bake     Kid-Friendly     Halloween     Party     Small Plates

Yield Makes 48 cake balls

Number Of Ingredients 13

48 uncoated Basic Cake Balls , formed into oval shapes and chilled
24 Oreos
Table knife
48 ounces (3 pounds) dark green candy coating
Deep, microwave-safe plastic bowl
48 paper lollipop sticks
48 green Tic Tac mints
Licorice wheels, cut into 192 pieces, each 1 1/2 inches long
Styrofoam block
Toothpicks
96 orange jimmies
48 Hershey's Kisses Brand Special Dark Chocolates
Black edible-ink pen

Steps:

  • To decorate
  • Have the oval cake balls chilled and in the refrigerator.
  • Separate the Oreos, scraping off the cream center with a table knife, so that you have 48 hat pieces; set aside.
  • Melt the dark green candy coating in a microwave-safe plastic bowl, following the instructions on the package. The coating should be about 3 inches deep for easier dipping. (I usually work with about 16 ounces of coating at a time.)
  • When you are ready to dip, remove a few shaped cake balls at a time from the refrigerator, keeping the rest chilled.
  • One at a time, dip about 1/2 inch of the tip of a lollipop stick in the melted candy coating, and insert the stick straight into the bottom of an oval-shaped cake ball, pushing it no more than halfway through. Dip the cake pop into the melted coating, and tap off any excess coating. Hold the pop over the bowl in one hand, and tap your wrist gently with your other hand. If you use the hand holding the cake pop to shake off excess coating, the force of the movement will be too strong and could cause the cake ball to loosen or fly off the lollipop stick. Tapping the wrist holding the cake pop absorbs some of the impact. The excess coating will fall off, but you will need to rotate the lollipop stick so the coating doesn't build up on one side, making it too heavy on that side. If too much coating starts to build up at the base of the stick, simply use your finger to wipe it off, spinning the lollipop stick at the same time. This can happen if the coating is too thin or too hot. It's not as hard as it sounds; it just takes a little practice.
  • Before the coating sets, attach a Tic Tac in position for the nose and an Oreo cookie half on top for the hat. Attach two 1 1/2-inch licorice wheel sections on either side of the witch's head for hair. Hold them in place until the candy coating sets like glue, and place in the Styrofoam block to dry. You can add more coating on the sides to attach the pieces if the coating sets too fast.
  • When the pops are dry, use a toothpick to dot a small amount of melted candy coating in position for the eyes, and attach 2 orange jimmies on each cake pop.
  • To finish the hats, tear off the paper sticking out of each Hershey's Kiss, and use a toothpick to apply a small amount of coating on the center of the Oreo hat bottom. Attach the wrapped chocolate candy in place and let dry.
  • Draw mouths with a black edible-ink pen, and let dry completely in the Styrofoam block.
  • Tip
  • The hats are delicate and may not do well if you will be transporting or wrapping them. They would be better served at a home Halloween gathering.

CREEPY WITCHES FINGERS

Creepy Witches Fingers image

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract (orange extract is also very tasty!)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
Green Food Coloring - several drops.
2 1/2 cups flour
Sliced Almonds, almond halves or whole almonds depending on what your store sells
1 (0.75 ounce) tube red coloring gel
Mini chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325*F In a bowl beat together butter and sugar until fluffly. This will take generally 3 - 5 minutes. Add in egg and beat well, scraping sides of bowl as needed. Add almond extract, vanilla extract, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Add in a few drops of food coloring until desired green color. Add in flour 1/2 cup at a time until fully incorporated. Mixture should look like pea sized crumbs. Scoop out 1 tablespoon of dough and roll in your hands until soft and pliable. Roll out snake like with your hands and make sure to keep the indents your fingers naturally make into the dough. Lay flat onto lined cookie sheet. Continue this process until cookie sheet is full. Place an almond on one end of the finger, press slightly so the almond stays in place but doesn't squish the dough too much. Next grab a butter knife and make 3 lines at each "knuckle mark." Don't worry about too many knuckles, it's well known that witches have arthritis and funky looking fingers. Bake for 12 minutes or until cookies are BARELY golden on the bottom. Over cooking these cookies will result in hard biscotti type cookies that will work well for dunking in hot chocolate. When you remove cookies from oven immediately place a mini chocolate chip on each finger as a "wart." Once cookies are cool, pipe red gel around finger nails and at base of finger to make it look bloody. Enjoy immediately and share with friends and neighbors!
