water or sparkling water
donuts
Jelly + edible sparkles
2 cups of powdered sugar
1 tbsp of milk
food coloring
amber rum
white wine
strawberry jam
blueberry jam
ladyfinger cookies
sweet mascarpone cream
raspberries
watermelon
whipped cream
melon
strawberries
blueberries
Honeydew, cut into stars
jack cheese slices
cheddar cheese slices
hot dogs

purple potato salad

Steps:

  • PATRIOTIC PUNCH: Place strawberries in ice cube tray, add water. Freeze. Add frozen blueberries in your glassware, add water, then place strawberry ice cubes on top. Enjoy you're stripped beverage!
  • FIRECRACKER DONUTS: Fill donut with jelly mixed with edible sparkles. Mix 2 cups powdered sugar together with 1 tbsp milk then divide into 3 bowls, add red and blue coloring to one bowl each then drizzle this into the bowl of white frosting, dip donuts in. Add more white on top if the frosting starts to turn purple.
  • STARS & STRIPES SANGRIA: Cut a quarter out of a watermelon, then remove some of the fruit. With an immersion blender blend the watermelon until you have a juice and add amber rum and white wine to taste. Serve in glasses with ice cubes and additional fruit. If you're feeling really festive, carve the front of your watermelon into an American flag, using blue berries and honey dew stars for the accent.
  • RED, WHITE & BERRY-MISU: Add a little water to blueberry and strawberry jam, dip ladyfingers in the jams and line them in a 9x13 glass baking dish. Start with a layer of strawberry-coated ladyfinger, then add the sweet mascarpone cream, followed by blueberry-coated ladyfingers then more cream. Finish with raspberries for the stripes and blueberries for the stars.
  • STAR-SPANGLED WATERMELON CAKE: Cut watermelon into rounds and remove the skin. Place on a cake stand, then add whipped cream and fruit. Repeat until you have 4 layers of watermelon and top with additional cream, fruit, and honeydew stars.
  • FLAG DOGS: Slice cheddar and jack cheese slices into thin strips, line them up in a pan to create stripes, take you're pre-grilled hot dogs and roll them in the cheese once it's melted. Place in a hot dog bun then stack on a serving dish to create the stripes of the American flag. Place a dish of purple potato salad in the upper left hand corner to act as the stars. Add cut out jack cheese stars for additional flare!

STARGAZY PIE

Stargazy Pie image

Properly speaking, this should be made with pilchards, but herrings will do. The inedible heads are stuck out through the pastry so that the rich oil they contain will drain back into the pie.

Provided by Food Network

Time 1h5m

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

Pie dough
8 pilchards or herrings
1 onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup each chopped parsley, fennel and thyme leaves
1 pinch saffron
2 tablespoons milk

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Line a pie dish with thinly rolled pie dough. Remove fins from fish and wipe off scales. Slit and gut them and fill the cavities with chopped onion and herbs. Arrange round the dish with heads to the rim. Cover with pie dough, and make a slit by each head. Pull the heads through the dough. Dissolve the saffron in the milk. Brush the pie dough with the saffron milk, and bake for about 35 minutes.

Provided by NicoleMcmom

Time 1h25m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 22

3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes
1 tablespoon kosher salt
¼ cup milk
3 tablespoons salted butter, divided
1 cup shredded white Cheddar cheese
¼ cup sour cream
1 large egg yolk
2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced carrot
1 pound ground lamb
1 pound ground beef sirloin
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme
1 cup beef stock
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup frozen green peas
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, or to taste

Steps:

  • Place potatoes in large saucepan and add enough water to cover by 2 inches. Stir in 1 tablespoon salt and place pot over medium-high heat; bring to a boil. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and drain.
  • Return potatoes to the hot pan and set over the same burner. Add milk and 2 tablespoons butter; allow butter to melt from the residual heat. Mash potatoes with a potato masher until smooth. Stir in Cheddar cheese, sour cream, egg yolk, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Set aside while you prepare the filling.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
  • Heat olive oil and remaining 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and carrot and cook, stirring constantly, until onion begins to turn translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Add lamb and beef and cook, crumbling with a spoon and stirring often until browned, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle meat mixture with flour, remaining salt and pepper, rosemary, and thyme. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes.
  • Add beef stock, tomato paste, and Worcestershire; cook, scraping any flavorful bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring mixture to a simmer. Cook until thickened and vegetables are tender, about 8 minutes. Stir in peas. Transfer mixture to the prepared casserole dish and top with the prepared mashed potatoes.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden and bubbly around the edges, 25 to 30 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.

STAR-SPANGLED SHORTCAKE

Star-Spangled Shortcake image

Salute Old Glory on Independence Day with this new spin on classic summer fare.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Breakfast & Brunch Recipes

Yield Makes one ring plus four extra stars

Number Of Ingredients 12

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3 1/2 cups plus 2 to 3 tablespoons heavy cream
1 large egg
1 pint raspberries
1 pint blueberries
2 pints strawberries, cut in half or quarters, depending on size
1/2 pint red currants (optional)
Confectioners' sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add butter; use a pastry cutter or two knives to incorporate butter until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Blend 2 cups heavy cream into flour mixture using a fork. Turn out onto a clean work surface; press away from you with the heel of your hand just to combine dough. Add 1 tablespoon cream if the dough is too dry to combine.
  • Prepare egg wash: Place egg and 2 tablespoons cream in a small bowl, and whisk to combine. Set aside.
  • Press dough into a 7-by-10-inch rectangle, 1 inch thick. Use a 3 1/2-inch star cutter to cut out six biscuits. Press three of the stars to flatten slightly. Form into a ring on a parchment-lined baking sheet, alternating flattened stars with unflattened stars, using egg wash to join them along common edge. Gather remaining dough; cut out four more stars for additional servings, if desired. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Remove dough from refrigerator. Brush top of star ring and individual stars with egg wash, and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar.
  • Bake for 5 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees; continue baking until golden brown, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  • Combine raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, red currants (if using), and remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a large bowl, and toss to combine. Allow berries to macerate for at least 30 minutes, until very juicy. Whip remaining 1 1/2 cups cream to soft peaks.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut star ring in half crosswise. Cut the four extra stars as well. Use two large offset spatulas to carefully lift the top half of the ring, and set aside, leaving the spatulas in place. Set aside tops of stars as well. Transfer bottom of ring to a serving platter. Transfer bottoms of stars to plates, if desired. Spoon macerated berries, juices, and whipped cream over star ring and additional stars. Place the tops on the star ring and stars using the spatulas, and dust with confectioners' sugar, if using. Serve immediately.

STAR-SPANGLED ICE CREAM SANDWICHES

Star-Spangled Ice Cream Sandwiches image

In this patriotic confection, three classic treats are combined into one delicious dessert. First, bake two thin cake layers in sheet pans, then spread softened vanilla ice cream onto one cake, swirling in raspberry sorbet for a marbled effect. For a little on-theme pop-art, stamp star shapes out of the second cake layer, place it on top, and freeze. When it's time to eat, all that's left for you to do is slice it up and wait for fireworks.
