Homemade ice cream is delicious and surprisingly easy. With just 20 minutes of prep, create frosty treats ready for cones, floats, and more -- or use our ideas for your favorite store-bought flavor!

Yield Makes 1 1/2 quarts

Number Of Ingredients 6

8 large egg yolks
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
2 cups skim milk
Choice of flavoring
2 cups heavy cream

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, off heat, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and salt until blended. Gradually whisk in milk.
  • Cook over medium, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until custard thickens slightly and evenly coats back of spoon (it should hold a line drawn by your finger), 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Pour custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl set over ice. Stir in cream. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until chilled. Churn in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions. Transfer ice cream to a resealable plastic container and freeze until firm, about 2 hours (or up to 3 months).

2 (15 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk
1 (15 ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (15 ounce) can heavy whipping cream, whipped
2 1/2-3 cups sugar (depending on fruit)
8 eggs
3 cups peaches or 3 cups blueberries, etc

Steps:

  • For 6 quart freezer.
  • To get the store bought consistency, make at least 8 hours ahead of time, remove dasher, pour out into large freezable container and freeze.
  • Freeze according to freezer directions.
  • I blend my fruit in a blender for a smoother taste.
  • For Butterfinger ice cream- crush 8 large bars with a hammer.
  • For Banana-Berry-Nut- add strawberries, 4-5 bananas, 1 cup pecans.
  • For Pineapple-Orange- add 1 lg pkg orange slices (melt with some milk) and a small can of crushed pineapple.

1 jar (12 ounces) caramel ice cream topping
1 carton (12 ounces) frozen reduced-fat whipped topping, thawed
1/4 cup chocolate syrup
2 Symphony candy bars with almonds and toffee (4-1/4 ounces each), chopped

Steps:

  • Arrange 14 ice cream sandwiches in an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. dish. Cut remaining sandwiches in half lengthwise; fill in the spaces in the dish. Spread with caramel and whipped toppings. Drizzle with chocolate syrup. Sprinkle with chopped candy bars. Cover and freeze for at least 45 minutes. Cut into squares.
