CHEESE & MARMITE SCONES

Cheese & Marmite scones image

Marmite gives a deep savoury flavour to these tasty pinwheel cheddar cheese scones - perfect for afternoon tea or a simple snack

Provided by Sara Buenfeld

Categories     Afternoon tea, Breakfast, Brunch, Buffet, Canapes, Side dish, Snack, Treat

Time 35m

Yield Makes 8

Number Of Ingredients 8

450g plain flour , plus extra for dusting
1 tbsp baking powder
3 tsp Marmite
1 large egg
about 250ml milk
1 tbsp sunflower oil
140g mature cheddar , grated
100g full-fat cream cheese

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7 and dust a baking tray with a little flour. Mix the flour and baking powder in a large bowl. Put 1 tsp Marmite in a jug, add the egg and make up to 300ml with the milk. Stir in the oil, then beat really well to dissolve the Marmite.
  • Tip 85g of the cheddar into a bowl and mix with the cream cheese and remaining Marmite to make a spread. Toss the rest of the cheese through the flour mixture, then pour in the milk mixture and stir with the blade of a knife until it comes together. (You need to work quickly once you've added the liquid, as it activates the baking powder.) Tip onto a lightly floured work surface and gently knead the mix, taking care not to overwork it, as it will make the scones heavy.
  • Press or lightly roll the dough into an oblong about 20 x 25cm. Spread with the Marmite mixture and roll up from the longest side to create a tight, fat cylinder. Pat the ends of the cylinder to straighten them, then slice into 8 pinwheels and put on the baking tray, patting them to make flattish rounds. Bake for 12-15 mins until golden and cooked.
  • Leave for a few mins on the tray to allow the cheese centre to harden a little, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Eat warm or cold. Best eaten on the day they are made.

SUPER EASY MARMITE CHEESE SCONES

Super Easy Marmite Cheese Scones image

Adapting a classic recipe to make super tasty, moist, and moreish Marmite Cheese scones! even haters will love these!

Provided by kier0787

Time 25m

Yield Makes 12-15

Number Of Ingredients 0

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 200C (190C for fan ovens). In a medium-large bowl sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Use a cheese grater to grate the butter, then place in the bowl and mix with your fingertips to make breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the grated cheese into the breadcrumb mixture and mix with a wooden spoon (so you don't melt the cheese with your hands).
  • Make a well in the centre of the mixture and pour in enough milk to give a fairly soft but firm dough. Do not pour in all the milk at once as you may not need it all to get the right consistency. Dont worry if its a bit sticky at this point
  • Lightly flour a surface and roll out the dough to approximately 2cm thick. Cut out the scones with a medium cutter and then place on a greased and lined oven tray. Glaze the tops with the extra milk and sprinkle a little cheese on the top of each scone before putting in the oven. You could even drizzle a bit of Marmite over them too!
  • Bake in the oven for around 15 mins (check after 10 mins, just in case)

EASY CHEESE AND GARLIC SCONES

Easy Cheese and Garlic Scones image

This is my favorite, very simple, recipe for savory scones. They are wonderful served hot, spread with a little butter, and eaten alongside a steamy hot soup. It's important not to over handle these scones, as they will be heavy and tough.

Categories     Bread     Quick Bread Recipes     Scone Recipes

Time 40m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups self-rising flour
2 tablespoons butter
1 pinch salt

1 cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, sift together flour and salt. Rub in butter lightly with finger tips until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in cheese and garlic. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk, reserving 1 teaspoon for a glazing the scones. Gently mix, just until combined.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead briefly and lightly. Be careful not to overwork the dough. Press out dough to form a 1 inch thick round. Cut into 8 wedges. Place on prepared tray and brush with reserved milk.

Provided by Lesley Waters

Categories     Afternoon tea, Buffet, Side dish, Snack, Supper, Treat

Time 35m

140g self-raising flour

85g mature cheddar grated
1 egg
1 tbsp yeast extract

3 tbsp milk plus extra to glaze

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Mix the flours and baking powder in a mixing bowl with a pinch of salt, if you like. Add the butter and rub with your fingertips until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor). Stir in ½ of the cheese and make a well in the centre.
  • Whisk the remaining ingredients together and pour into the well. With a cutlery knife, bring the mixture together to make a soft, but not sticky dough. Add a little more milk if the dough is too dry.
