1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In an 8-inch square baking pan, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in center of flour mixture and add oil, vanilla, vinegar, and water. Whisk until well combined. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

2 cups white sugar
⅝ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups cold water
2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
⅔ cup vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients right in a 9 x 13 inch pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Frost with your favorite frosting.

For when you don't want to put in a lot of effort and don't want much washing up to do afterwards. I would just serve as is, but you can frost it if you want to. UPDATE 5/20/7: Some of the reviewers have not liked the combination of cloves with chocolate that much so I'm making inclusion of that ingredient optional. If you're not sure, cut back to 1/4 tsp, or try adding just a tiny bit to a small portion of the dough and see if you like the taste--or just leave it out altogether.

Steps:

  • Sift the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, salt and spices together into an 8-inch X 8-inch pan.
  • Make 3 holes in the mixture.
  • Pour oil in one hole, vinegar into the 2nd and vanilla in the 3rd.
  • Pour 1 c water over all.
  • Stir with a fork until all ingredients are blended.
  • Do NOT remove batter from pan.
  • Bake at 350° 45 minutes.

1/2 teaspoon salt
TOPPING:
1-1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup half-and-half cream

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13x9-in. pan. In a bowl, combine oats, butter and chocolate; pour boiling water over top. Let stand 10 minutes., Stir oatmeal mixture until combined; whisk in eggs and brown sugar. In another bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda and salt; stir into oatmeal mixture just until combined., Transfer to prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 30-35 minutes. Remove from oven. Preheat broiler., Combine topping ingredients; spread over warm cake. 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon vinegar
1 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Grease 8 inch square pan, sift dry ingredients into pan.
  • Mix together the oil, vinegar, and vanilla, add to the dry ingredients.
  • Pour cold water over the mixture and mix well but do not beat. I just use a wooden spoon.
  • Spread evenly in pan and bake for 35-40 minutes at 350°F until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • *Note - When I make this, it is a very thin batter, but it still bakes up perfectly.
