2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1/2 cup salt
2 cups water
2 tablespoons canola oil
Food coloring

Steps:

In a large saucepan, combine the flour, cream of tarter and salt. Gradually add the water and oil. Cook and stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes or until a ball forms., Cool. Divide dough and knead in colors as desired. Store in airtight containers or resealable plastic bags.

This recipe is from my children's preschool art teacher. This truly is the best ever playdough recipe. It will last for several months in an airtight container. No refrigeration is needed. In addition to the food coloring you can add extracts or spices to give it different smells, though these can change how much flour you need to add.

2 1/2 cups flour, plus more
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon alum (a preservative usually found with the spices at the grocery)
1 3/4 cups boiling water
2 tablespoons salad oil
food coloring

Steps:

Mix flour and salt in a large bowl.
In a glass measuring cup, mix alum, water, oil, and color and add to the flour/salt mixture. Stir until slightly cool.
Knead well, adding flour until it stops sticking to your hands.
Keep in an airtight container when not in use.

I got this recipe from astay-at-home mom's blog named Robin's song. It is far superior to any storebought. I make the recipe with a third of these measurements because it is a huge batch of just one color. I put a drop of peppermint extract in, it covers any floury, pasty smell. Use regular table salt for this, once I only had kosher salt in the house and the dough was a bit grainy. Please note, this is safe and non-toxic but not edible playdough.

3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups salt
3 cups water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
food coloring

Steps:

Place all ingredients into a large saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan and gets too thick to stir (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool until it can be handled. Place on counter or wax paper and knead several times until smooth. Store in an air-tight container.
