1 red apple skin on, cored and sliced crosswise (see Cook's Note)
1/4 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 cup granola
1 tablespoon Cinnamon Sugar, recipe follows
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Spread all the apple slices except the top slice with peanut butter.
  • Sprinkle granola and cinnamon sugar over the peanut butter.
  • Stack the apples, alternating between red and green slices.
  • Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to eat.
  • Mix sugar and cinnamon together until blended.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
Pinch salt
6 slices day-old bread, cubed

Steps:

  • In an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan, combine the butter, oil and seasonings. Heat in a 300° oven until butter is melted. Remove from the oven; stir to combine. , Add bread cubes and toss to coat. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring frequently. Cool. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

¼ cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons garlic salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Remove crusts from stale bread slices. Brush bread on both sides with melted butter. Cut bread slices up into small cubes. Sprinkle with garlic salt (if desired). Arrange cubes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes or until browned. Let cool. Store croutons in a covered container or plastic bag. Serve in soups or salads.

1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
6 cups bread cubes, baguettes work well (approx. 8-10 slices of bread)
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon marjoram
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon dill weed
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon ground celery seed
salt (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Melt butter/margarine.
  • Add spices to butter/margarine.
  • Pour mixture over bread pieces to coat.
  • Spread bread evenly on cookie sheet.

Homemade whole wheat croutons seasoned with cinnamon sugar perfectly accent this smooth and flavorful soup.

1 tablespoon brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 slices SARA LEE® Soft & Smooth™ Whole Grain White Bread, cubed
1 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground ginger
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup fat-free half-and-half

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F(200 degrees C). In a small bowl, mix together melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. In a large bowl, toss bread cubes with melted butter mixture to coat. Spread bread cubes evenly over a baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until bread is crisp and toasted. Set croutons aside.
  • Saute onion in canola oil in a medium saucepan until tender. Stir in 1 can chicken broth. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes.
  • Transfer broth mixture into the container of a blender or processor. Process until smooth.
  • Return mixture to saucepan. Add remaining can of broth, pumpkin, salt, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and ground pepper; stir well. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in half-and-half, and heat through. Do not boil. Ladle into individual soup bowls. Top each serving with cinnamon croutons.

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Spread a thin layer of apple butter onto both sides of each slice of bread, and cut into cubes. Place these in a bag or bowl, and pour the cinnamon sugar over them. Shake or stir to coat. Arrange the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet.
