Steps:
- Mix all ingredients in 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on low heat setting 8 to 10 hours or until apples are very tender.
- Mash apples with potato masher or large fork.
- Cook uncovered on low heat setting 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is very thick. Cool about 2 hours.
- Spoon apple butter into container. Cover and store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks.

Steps:
- Heat oven to 350°F. In medium bowl, combine cake mix and vanilla. Cut in 1/2 cup butter, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through mixture in opposite directions), until mixture is crumbly. Reserve 1 cup mixture for topping. In bottom of ungreased 8-inch square pan, press remaining crumb mixture. Bake 15 minutes. Meanwhile, stir walnuts, oats and melted butter into reserved crumb mixture.
- Spread apple butter evenly over partially baked crust to within 1 inch of edge. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture, pressing gently into apple butter.
- Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until center is set. Cool in pan on cooling rack 1 hour. Sprinkle with additional chopped walnuts, if desired. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.

- In a small bowl, combine the first five ingredients. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 4 months. Yield: 4 batches (about 1 cup total)., To prepare apple butter: In a large saucepan, bring apples and apple juice to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 5-7 minutes or until apples are tender. Drain; mash with a potato masher. Stir in 1/4 cup mix until sugar is dissolved. Cover and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

- Cream together shortening and sugar.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time, beat until light and fluffy.
- Stir in 1 cup apple butter.
- Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with sour milk.
- Turn into 2 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
- Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Cool throughly.
- Spread bottom layer of cake with 1/4 cup apple butter.
- Top with frosting.
- Cover with top cake layer.
- Frost top and sides with any marshmallow frosting.
- Swirl remaining apple butter on top for a marbled effect.
