CHEESY BACON STRAWS

1/4 cup maple syrup
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1/2 orange, juiced
1 pound regular uncured bacon (not thick cut)
1/4 cup finely shredded Cheddar

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and fit a baking sheet with a wire rack.
  • In a small saucepot, mix the maple syrup, red pepper flakes, orange juice and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat.
  • Line up the bacon slices on the wire rack and brush with the hot maple syrup mixture. Sprinkle some cheese on each piece of bacon. With a skewer in hand, fold the end of a piece of bacon in half lengthwise and press the skewer through the end. Do this to 4 pieces of bacon, spreading them out evenly across the skewer, and place the skewer on the baking sheet. Twist the bacon pieces into long spirals so as to create straws. Take another skewer and skewer the bottom of each piece of bacon to keep the bacon twisted. Do this to all the bacon.
  • Bake until the bacon browns, about 35 minutes. Let cool slightly on the rack; the bacon will get crunchy as it sits. Serve immediately.

1 teaspoon milk
2/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Separate crescent dough into four 8-in. x 6-in. rectangles; gently press perforations to seal. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, bacon, onion and milk. Spread evenly over rectangles. , Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seams to seal. Cut each roll into eight slices; place cut side down on ungreased baking sheets. , Bake at 375° for 7 minutes. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake 5-8 minutes longer or until golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature. Refrigerate leftovers.

2 tablespoons dry mustard powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 pound sliced bacon

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set a wire rack over the foil. Use a baking sheet that has sides to catch the grease.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, mustard powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. Press each slice of bacon into the mixture until coated. Twist each strip a few times and place on the prepared baking rack.
  • Bake until bacon is browned and crisp enough to hold its shape, about 30 minutes.

1 can(s) crescent rolls, 8 oz
1 package(s) cream cheese, softened, 8 oz
8-10 slice(s) bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 tablespoon(s) minced onions
1-2 teaspoon(s) milk
1/4 cup(s) grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, add cream cheese and minced onions.
  • Add cooked and crumbled bacon.
  • Mix together adding a little milk at a time until it is creamy and will spread evenly.
  • Unroll crescent roll dough. Press formations to seal the seams. Spread the cream cheese mixture leaving about 1/4" around the edges.
  • Roll up, jelly-roll style, starting at the long side. Press edges to seal.
  • Cut about 1/4" and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Sprinkle swirls evenly with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375 for 12 to 15 minutes or until brown.

I have been making these for eons from an old Pillsbury cookbook, though I have changed the recipe a bit over time. I recently started using the new Recipe Creations flaky dough sheets from Pillsbury instead of the crescent dinner rolls listed below. Either way, they are very little work for such a huge welcoming from your guests and family. Be prepared to double this recipe.

1 (8 ounce) can Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon milk
2 tablespoons hormel real bacon bits (can substitute 5 slices bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled)
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese, grated

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F.
  • If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate into 4 rectangles. Firmly press perforations to seal. If using dough sheets: Unroll dough; cut into 4 rectangles.
  • In small bowl, mix cream cheese, onion and milk; beat until well blended.
  • Spread about 2 tablespoons cream cheese mixture evenly over each rectangle.
  • Sprinkle each with bacon.
  • Roll up, starting at longest side; pinch edges to seal.
  • Cut each roll into 8 slices.
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Serve warm. Store in refrigerator.

1 (4-ounce) can mushrooms, drained and chopped
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 (8-ounce) tube refrigerated crescent rolls
2 (3-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 egg white, beaten
Garnish: poppy seed

Steps:

  • Mix together bacon, mushrooms, mayonnaise and garlic powder; set aside. Separate crescent rolls into 4 rectangles; press together perforations. Spread rolls with cream cheese; top with bacon mixture. Roll lengthwise; slice into one-inch pieces. Arrange on an ungreased baking sheet. Brush with egg white; sprinkle with poppy seed. Bake for 9 minutes at 375 degrees, until golden. Tip: Check out what's new at the supermarket!   • Preheat oven to 375°. In a small skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir until tender, 3-5 minutes. Reduce heat to low; add preserves. Cook and stir until melted., Unroll crescent dough into one long rectangle. Roll into a 15x9-in. rectangle, sealing seams and perforations.
