I have a recipe posted for taco seasoning and it's my go-to recipe anytime I need a package of taco seasoning mix - tastes so much better than the packaged stuff. For the last several years, I've written down the following recipe for every bridal shower I've attended where I was asked to bring a recipe. I finally decided that I should post it here. Serve with your favorite taco topping or as a salad or nachos. This recipe may also be used with ground turkey.

cooking spray
1 lb ground beef
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons dried onion, minced
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup beef broth

Steps:

  • Coat a large skillet with spray oil.
  • Add ground beef to skillet along with garlic.
  • Cook over medium heat until browned - about 10 minutes.
  • Add dried onion, chili powder, oregano, cumin, salt, cinnamon and red pepper and stir well.
  • Add tomato paste and beef broth.
  • Bring to a boil and reduce heat, simmering until the liquid is reduced - about 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve with your favorite taco toppings.

2 pounds ground beef
1 small onion, diced
3-4 cloves garlic minced
1 jalapeno, seeded and finely diced
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon onion salt
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with onion, garlic and jalapeno, breaking the meat into small pieces, until beef is cooked through, 6-8 minutes; drain grease if needed.
  • Stir in all of the spices, along with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook for an additional minute or two.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Reseason with salt and pepper, to taste, if needed.
  • Serve with taco shells, tortillas, and your favorite taco toppings.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 yellow onion, diced
2 pounds ground beef
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
20 fajita-sized flour tortillas
18 hard taco shells
1 pound Cheddar-Jack cheese, grated
15 Roma tomatoes, diced
1 head green leaf lettuce, shredded

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  • For the beef: In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and onions. Cook until starting to soften, then add the ground beef. Cook the meat until it's totally browned, then drain the fat. Add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper and stir to combine. Add 1/2 cup hot water and stir. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • For the fixins: Meanwhile, wrap the flour tortillas in foil and warm in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Right before serving, crisp the taco shells in the oven according to package instructions.
  • Serve with the grated cheese, diced tomatoes and shredded lettuce.

Taco Seasoning:
680 grams Regular-Fat Ground Beef
2 - 4 tbsp Olive Oil
1 tbsp Chili Powder
1 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin
1/2 tsp Sea Salt
1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
1/2 tsp Paprika
1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
1/4 tsp Onion Powder
1/4 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
1/4 tsp Dried Oregano

Steps:

  • Mix all Taco Seasoning ingredients in a bowl. Lightly coat frying pan with olive oil. Heat pan to medium-high heat. Add ground beef, breaking it up with the sharp end of a spatula. Brown beef until pink color is completely gone with minimal mixing with the spatula. Beef should be fully cooked, just to a light golden brown, but not crispy. Turn burner to low or off and drain off excess grease from beef. Turn burner back on to medium heat. Evenly shake on Taco Seasoning (about 1/2 tbps for up to a pound of beef, lightly mixing it in quickly with the spatula. Allow beef to heat up with the seasoning for about 1 minute. Add about 1/2 cup of water. Simmer beef for 15 minutes allowing excess water to boil off, but not allowing beef to become dry (add water, or increase heat or cooking time as necessary). Serve as Beef Taco Filling with soft or hard tacos and your favorite toppings, condiments and sides!

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef with onion drain.
  • Add other ingredients.
  • Simmer add more seasoning to taste.
  • This can be a little dry.
  • This is not Health Food!
  • I have added a little cooking oil to the Mix.
