Thinly sliced chicken breasts featuring Chinese five spice. I like to serve this recipe with rice noodles from a recipe on this site: Quick Chinese-Style Vermicelli.

¼ cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon dry sherry
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root
2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
1 ½ pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Whisk soy sauce, olive oil, sherry, orange juice, garlic, ginger, and Chinese five-spice powder together in a bowl; pour into a resealable plastic bag. Add chicken, coat with the marinade, squeeze bag to remove excess air, and seal the bag. Marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate.
  • Remove chicken slices from the marinade; shake to remove excess moisture. Discard remaining marinade.
  • Grill chicken until no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, about 3 minutes per side.

1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
salt & pepper
1/4 cup fat-free low-sodium chicken broth
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
3 medium garlic cloves, crushed
1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon canola oil
3/4 lb pork tenderloin, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 cup sliced onion
1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced (about 1 C)
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons slivered almonds

Steps:

  • Season rice to taste.
  • Mix broth with vinegar, five-spice powder, garlic, and soy sauce; set aside.
  • Heat oil in a wok or nonstick skillet over high heat. Add pork and onion and stir-fry 2 minutes. Add bell pepper and continue to stir-fry 1 minute. Sprinkle flour over ingredients and toss.
  • Add broth mixture to wok and stir-fry 2 minutes. Remove to a bowl. Add seasoned rice to wok and stir-fry 1 minute to heat.
  • Divide rice between 2 dinner plates and top with pork mixture. Sprinkle with almonds.

4 pounds pork shoulder, cut into cubes
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

Steps:

  • Season pork with salt and pepper.
  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat; cook pork and garlic in hot oil until the pork is completely browned, 7 to 10 minutes.
  • Stir brown sugar, soy sauce, fish sauce, and five-spice powder with the pork. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook mixture at a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the pork is tender enough to easily pull apart with a fork, about 2 hours.

4 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon sunflower oil
3 scallions, shredded
1 teaspoon grated fresh gingerroot
1 1/4 cups button mushrooms, sliced
2/3 cup baby corn, sliced
2 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons dry sherry
1 teaspoon sugar
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Toss the fish in the five-spice powder and cornstarch to coat.
  • Heat the oil in a frying pan or wok and stir-fry the scallions, ginger, mushrooms, and corn for 1 minute.
  • Add the spiced fish and cook for 2 minutes, turning once.
  • Mix together the soy sauce, sherry, and sugar, then pour over the fish.
