Mary's Sugar Cookies are a classic sugar cookie recipe with buttercream icing and sprinkles.

Provided by Lise Sullivan Ode

Categories     Dessert

Time 32m

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (163g)
1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)
1 large egg (room temperature)
1 teaspoon vanilla (I used McCormick)
1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (330g)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (1 stick)
4 cups powdered sugar (454g)
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 tablespoons milk (or more, enough to make it spreadable)
Optional garnish - sprinkles

Steps:

  • Mix sugar and butter. Add egg and flavorings; mix thoroughly. Measure flour. Stir dry ingredients together and blend in. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
  • Heat oven to 350°F. Divide dough in half and roll 3/16" thick on lightly floured surface. (I roll it between two sheets of parchment.) Cut with cookie cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet or, if using parchment paper to roll out cookies, just place the parchment paper with cut cookies right onto a cookie sheet. Bake 7-9 minutes or until delicately golden. Makes 30 (3") round cookies.
  • Meanwhile, make the frosting. Beat butter, sugar, milk and vanilla together until smooth and creamy. Frost cookies and add sprinkles, if desired.

GRANDMA'S CLASSIC SUGAR COOKIES

Grandma's Classic Sugar Cookies image

This fabulous recipe for grandma's sugar cookies is light, tender, and delicate; they're perfect for decorating for the holiday season.

Provided by Linda Larsen

Categories     Dessert

Time 35m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and light; this should take about 5 minutes with an electric mixer, or 10 minutes by hand. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix well.
  • Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture alternately to the butter and sugar mixture with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Cover the dough tightly with plastic wrap and foil and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight. (If the dough is chilled overnight, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before rolling out so that task is easier.)
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough using a floured rolling pin to about 1/4" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters.
  • Or you can roll the dough into 1" balls, place on cookie sheets and flatten with the bottom of a water glass dipped in sugar.
  • Bake the cookies on ungreased cookie sheets for 7 to 10 minutes until they are very lightly golden brown around the edges. Let the cookies cool on the cookie sheets for about a minute, then remove to wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
