This is the first on the dessert table to be devoured at any function or festivity! I made this up from a pie I had eaten at a restaurant years ago. This recipe makes two deep dish pies.

MOM'S HARVEST APPLE PIE

Categories     dessert

Time 1h20m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 orange, zested
1 cup fresh cranberries
1/3 cup raisins
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pie crust dough, enough for top and bottom (from your own favorite recipe)
1/4 cup half-and-half
Sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, orange zest, cranberries, raisins, walnuts, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Roll out the bottom dough and place it into a 9-inch pan, leaving 1-inch of pie dough hanging over. Pour the pie filling into the crust. Roll out the top dough and cut it with a scalloped pastry wheel into 15 strips. Gently twist the strips 2 or 3 times, beginning with the longest ones, and place them on top of the pie, working outward and in various angles. Gently fold the bottom crust up over the edge of the pie and flute the edges with your fingertips. With a pastry brush, gently brush the half-and-half over the entire top crust and edges and then sprinkle generously with sugar.
  • Bake until apples are cooked, about 45 to 50 minutes. (You can check the apples with a fork to make sure they are tender). Remove to a rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.

HARVEST APPLE PIE WITH HAZELNUT STREUSEL

Harvest Apple Pie with Hazelnut Streusel image

A special dessert with apples and rum-soaked cherries and apricots piled into pastry, and topped with a nutty streusel.

Provided by Allrecipes Member

Time 3h30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 14

½ cup chopped dried apricots
½ cup chopped dried cherries
¼ cup rum or orange juice
⅓ cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground coriander
¾ teaspoon ground ginger
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 cups thinly sliced peeled Granny Smith apples (see notes below)
1 purchased refrigerated pastry for a 9-inch single-crust pie (half of a 15-oz. package), at room temperature
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
6 tablespoons cold butter or margarine, cut into chunks
½ cup chopped hazelnuts

Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix apricots, cherries, and rum; let stand until fruit is slightly softened, 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix granulated sugar, cornstarch, coriander, ginger, cinnamon, and apples. Stir in dried-fruit mixture.
  • Ease pastry gently into a 9-inch pie pan, fold edge under itself flush with rim, and flute decoratively. Mound apple mixture in crust.
  • In a food processor or a bowl, whirl or stir 1 cup flour and the brown sugar until well blended. Add butter and whirl or rub in with your fingers until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts and whirl until coarsely chopped, or chop nuts with a knife and stir into flour mixture. Squeeze handfuls of the streusel until it sticks together, then crumble into chunks evenly over apple mixture. Set pie on a foil-lined rimmed baking pan.
  • Bake on the bottom rack of a 350 degree regular or convection oven until filling is bubbling around the edges, about 1 1/4 hours. If pie becomes brown too quickly, cover the dark portions loosely with foil. Cool on a rack at least 1 1/2 hours.
