A good recipe for Salisbury steak recipe is hard to find! I remember enjoying it often when I was growing up, but when I decided to add it to my recipe collection, I wasn't able to find it in my modern cookbooks. I came up with these ingredients on my own and experimented until it tasted like I remembered. -Faye Hintz, Springfield, Missouri

1 egg
3 tablespoons crushed butter-flavored crackers
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon rubbed sage
3/4 pound ground beef
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1-3/4 cups water
2 beef bouillon cubes
1/4 teaspoon browning sauce, optional
Hot mashed potatoes

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, combine egg, cracker crumbs, onion, salt, pepper and sage. Add beef and mix well. Shape into two patties. , In a medium skillet, cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side or until browned; drain. Remove to a platter and keep warm. , In the same skillet, saute mushrooms in butter for 2 minutes. Stir in flour; blend well. Add water and bouillon; cook and stir until smooth and thickened. Stir in browning sauce if desired. Return patties to gravy and cook, uncovered, over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve with mashed potatoes.

1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup crushed saltines (about 15 crackers)
1/4 cup egg substitute
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1 tablespoon canola oil
2 cups water
1 envelope reduced-sodium onion soup mix
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine onion, saltines, egg substitute and pepper. Add beef; mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into five patties., In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add patties; cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until lightly browned. Remove patties and keep warm; discard drippings., Combine water, soup mix and flour; stir into skillet. Bring to a boil. Return patties to skillet. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, 5-7 minutes or until meat is no longer pink. , Freeze option: Freeze individual cooled steak with some gravy in an airtight container. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Microwave, covered, on high in a microwave-safe dish until heated through, gently stirring and adding a little water if necessary.

1.4 ounces dry french onion soup mix
1 egg (beaten)
2 Tablespoons water
12 ounces beef gravy

Steps:

  • Mix together the ground beef, bread crumbs, french onion mix, egg and water.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Spray a large skillet with cooking spray and warm up over medium heat.
  • Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 10 minutes on each side.
  • Drain the grease from the skillet, and then add in the jar of gravy.
  • Continue to cook in the gravy, covered, for 10 more minutes, flipping halfway through.
