A thrifty Dutch method of turning old bread into a delicious children's breakfast.

9 slices bread, old
21 pieces eggs
300 ml milk, lukewarm
15 g sugar
50 g butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Beat the eggs with the sugar and vanilla extract (or lemon peel). Add the milk.
  • Soak the bread slides in this. Make sure the slices are soaked but do not break. Let drip out on a plate.
  • Cook the wentelteefjes in the light brown butter (or hot oil) on both sides until brown.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

1 ei
1 el honing
100 ml melk
1 tl kaneel
6 sneetjes wit brood
40 gr boter
poedersuiker
verse bosvruchten
Wentelteefjes
1 ei
suiker
2 zakjes vanillesuiker
1 tl kaneelpoeder
250 ml melk
8 sneetjes brood
40 gr boter

Steps:

  • Honingwentelteefjes 1. Breek het ei in de ondiepe schaal. Doe de honing erbij en klop het goed door elkaar. Roer de melk en de kaneel erdoor. 2. Snijd de korstjes van de sneetjes brood en snijd elk sneetje doormidden, je krijgt dan 12 reepjes. Leg de reepjes brood in de schaal met het eiermengsel en keer ze om, de broodjes worden nu helemaal vochtig van het eiermengsel. 3. Zet de koekenpan op het fornuis op half hoog vuur, laat even warm worden en smelt dan een stukje boter. Leg vier reepjes brood in de koekenpan en bak ze vlug aan beide kanten goudbruin en knapperig. 4. Leg ze daarna op de schotel en houd ze warm. Wentelteefjes 1. In diep bord ei, vanillesuiker, kaneelpoeder en melk loskloppen. 2. Korstjes van brood snijden. Sneetjes brood één voor één door eimengsel wentelen en op elkaar in ander diep bord leggen. Rest van eimengsel over broodstapel schenken. Laten intrekken totdat alle sneetjes doorweekt zijn. In grote koekenpan helft van boter verhitten en helft van sneetjes brood in ca. 5 minuten goudbruin bakken, halverwege voorzichtig keren. Wentelteefjes uit pan nemen en op (warm) bord leggen. 3. Rest van boter verhitten en op dezelfde manier rest van wentelteefjes bakken.

'Wentelteefjes' literally translated in English is 'Turning Bitches'. Where does the name come from and what are they called elsewhere? The old Dutch word ' Wentelteefjes ' can indeed be traced back. 'Wentel' comes from the word 'turn around', so to turn around. 'Teefje' is a word that used to be used as the predecessor of the word 'pastry'

1 cup of whole milk
1 egg
1 tbsp cinnamon
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp Vanilla (optional)

Steps:

  • You know how it is sometimes you make too much bread. One of the things you can do with it is make "Wentelteefjes'. Cut thick slices of bread( if you don't have home made bread, get the Texas toast). Some people will cut the crust off, I don't.
  • Put the milk, in a bowl and add 1 egg, cinnamon and sugar. Optional you can add vanilla. Whisk well. Let the bread soak for a few minutes. Then add butter to your skillet and fry the bread on both sides. You can top it with for example with sugar, syrup and fruit of your choice.
