This hot lemon and ginger drink is the best way to fight off a cold. Using fresh lemon and ginger, with the optional addition of honey, this drink requires little preparation and is packed with good stuff to warm you right up.

1/2 lemon
1 cm fresh ginger
boiling water
1 tsp honey ((optional))

Steps:

  • To each tea cup, add 2 slices of lemon and 3 slices of fresh ginger. Don't worry about peeling the ginger. Add a little squeeze of lemon, about 1 tsp or the juice from 1/4 lemon.
  • Fill the cup with boiling hot water, and allow it to steep for 2-3 minutes. Leave the lemon and ginger in the cup as you drink it if you like the strong flavour. You can also remove the pieces after steeping.
  • Optionally, add 1 tsp of honey, and stir.

2 teaspoons more or less, according to taste peeled and chopped fresh ginger root
Juice of half a lemon (preferably organic)
1 heaping teaspoon honey (preferably raw, organic and local)
Large (12-14 oz.) mug (350-400 ml)
Water

Steps:

  • Peel and chop the ginger and put it in the bottom of your mug. Meanwhile, bring a mugful of water to a boil. Pour the boiling water over the chopped ginger, filling up to ½ inch (1 cm) from the top so there's room for the lemon and honey. Let the ginger and water steep for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the ginger and stir in the lemon juice and honey. Drink while warm.
  • Drink one to two mugs per day while symptoms last.

Steps:

  • Place honey, lemon juice, ginger, and cinnamon in a teapot or 4-cup glass measuring beaker with spout. Pour boiling water over mixture and stir well until honey is dissolved. Cover and let steep for 5 minutes. The ginger should sink to the bottom, but may be strained out while pouring into mug.

1/2 cup Ginger Simple Syrup for Hot Honey Lemonade
4 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
4 teaspoons honey
3 cups boiling water
12 whole cloves
4 lemon wedges
12 honey-drop candies

Steps:

  • Pour 2 tablespoons simple syrup in each of four heatproof glasses or mugs. Add 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon honey, and 3/4 cup boiling water to each; stir until honey dissolves.
  • Stick 3 cloves into each lemon wedge; drop a wedge and 3 candies into each drink. Serve immediately.

The proprietor was nice enough to give me a rough description of her recipe. After a few tries at home, I came up with this close version.

¾ cup brown sugar
¼ cup grated ginger root
3 tea bags
2 lemons, juiced
3 tablespoons honey

Steps:

  • Stir water, brown sugar, and grated ginger root together in a saucepan; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook at a simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Remove saucepan from heat and add tea bags; steep tea to desired strength, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags.
  • Stir lemon juice and honey into the tea; strain into a pitcher.
